A Strong Math Foundation Starts Here

These 3-month intro courses give children the skills they need for math success. Elementary school students who can recall their math facts tor addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with accuracy, efficiency, and understanding have achieved what we call Numerical Fluency. This is critical to building a strong math foundation. By working with caring, well-trained instructors in a fun and engaging environment, they also develop confidence and a love for math.

Why Every Child Needs This Course

  • Our proven curriculum teaches them to think critically, taking them beyond strict memorization of facts
  • This is a launchpad to more advanced skills, as they learn to rely on their brain power rather than inefficient techniques such as finger counting
  • This new knowledge will give them the confidence to tackle what comes next in higher grades

How Mathnasium Helps with Building Fact Fluency

Every Mathnasium student starts with a personalized assessment, which determines their current ability level and identifies any learning gaps. Our proprietary instructional materials were designed by math experts to guide students through the learning process in a way that reinforces their knowledge and gives them the confidence to tackle what comes next. Caring, well-trained math instructors use simple, clear language that children understand and employ a variety of teaching techniques so that learning is fun and each child is able to grasp concepts in the ways they learn best.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is numerical fluency important for my child?

Students who can recall their math facts for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with accuracy, efficiency, and understanding have achieved numerical fluency. This is critical to building a strong foundation for math success and smooths the way to future learning.

  • Why do students often struggle with mastering basic math facts?

The problem often stems from how math facts are taught in the early grades, where the focus is primarily on memorization and timed tests. This approach can cause anxiety for students and often does not lead to true understanding. When students forget a fact, they tend to rely on inefficient strategies like finger counting, foot-taping, head-bobbing, or other techniques, because they haven’t developed the comprehension needed for numerical fluency.

  • What are the problems with finger counting?

When kids rely on finger counting or counting by ones to add or subtract, two main issues can occur: either it takes them too long to arrive at the correct answer, or they end up with the wrong answer altogether.

  • How does Mathnasium help students achieve numerical fluency?

We use five key strategies to ensure students achieve numerical fluency:

    • Personalized Assessment – We assess each student’s current level and identify any gaps in understanding.
    • Mastering Prerequisite Skills – We ensure mastery of necessary prerequisite skills before presenting students with techniques that require their use.
    • Clear, Natural Language – We use simple, clear language that children understand like "5 x 3 means 5, three times.”
    • Effective Techniques – We teach efficient, reliable, and effective techniques that leverage what students already know, making it easier to learn new facts.
    • Intelligent Worksheets – Our instructional materials are designed to guide students through the learning process in a way that reinforces their understanding.
  • What is Mathnasium’s Numerical Fluency program?

The Numerical Fluency program offers two courses: Addition & Subtraction and Multiplication & Division. Both are designed to help students master their basic math facts. It is a launch pad to more advanced skills as they learn to rely on their knowledge rather than inefficient techniques such as finger counting. They also gain the confidence to tackle what comes next in higher grades.

  • Why does my student need an assessment before enroling?

Mathnasium’s diagnostic assessment identifies whether your child has gaps in their understanding of basic math facts or are ready to move forward. The assessment also highlights which specific areas need improvement, allowing us to create a personalized learning plan. This ensures students master all the necessary prerequisite skills before we teach them new material.

  • How can I enrol my student in one of the courses?

Enroling is easy! Just follow these steps:

    1. Complete the form and select either the Addition/Subtraction or Multiplication/Division course.
    2. Expect a call from an education specialist to discuss your student’s needs.
    3. Attend weekly sessions to build your student’s numerical fluency.
