Robert Donelan, Center Director

Robert Donelan is the center director for the Mathnasium of Downtown Silver Spring. He has worked in three Mathnasiums for a total of 7 years prior to joining us. He grew up the son of a local grocery store owner in northwestern Kansas. He was formerly the center director for the McLean Mathnasium before coming to Downtown Silver Spring. Prior to this he worked as an instructor in a new Mathnasium in Burbank, California for 3 years. He has a sociology degree from Grinnell College in Iowa and has taken many math courses at several universities since graduating. He has been a math teacher in private schools, high schools, and middle schools, uncluding local stints at Coolidge High School and Sidwell Friends School. He was the head of the math department at Hyde Leadership Public Charter School in Washington D.C. He has also worked as a couselor and special education teacher in public and private schools, so he is able to see many aspects of students and enjoys the challenge of finding solutions to any learning issues presented.

Outside of work, Robert enjoys traveling, biking, playing games, gardening, and solving puzzles. Playing spades, growin tomatoes, and solving sudoku puzzles are among his favorites. He recently taught English in China for three years and has visited all 50 of the US states. Coaching and refereeing wrestling and soccer for many seasons, and having participated in several other sports himself, Robert has a lengthy career with athletes. Students of all ages and types intrigue him, and he relishes discovering ways to get students to enjoy learning and then nourishes the new-found hunger.

Billy Kimmel, Lead Instructor

Billy earned his Bachelors of Arts in Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science from St. Mary's College of Maryland in 2016. He has always enjoyed the challenges that mathematics can bring and worked to gain a deep understanding of math. Billy tackles everyday problems by using the logical thought processes gained from learning math to aid his rational thinking. Throughout high school and college, Billy tutored his peers in Calculus and advanced mathematics courses, but also taught elementary school students the basics of multiplication and working with fractions. He worked for a year as an instructor and assistant center director for Mathnasium of Laurel, and is excited to bring his experience to the Downtown Silver Spring center.

Throughout his education, Billy has never been satisfied with just knowing how to complete a series of tasks. He has always had the desire to truly understand the concepts behind the material he learned in school. This has lead him to enjoy solving challenging mathematical problems in his spare time. In addition, Billy enjoys video games, board games, puzzles, and hiking in his free time. His favorite math game is Set, which relies on rapid recognition of patterns.

Ashley Henríquez, Office Administrator

Welcome! My name is Ashley Henríquez and I am an Administrative Assistant here at Mathnasium. I have earned my Associates of Science in Engineering from Prince George's Community College. I am currently finishing my undergrad studies at the University of Maryland College Park in Electrical Engineering and am a part of the Latin American Studies Certificate Program. I believe in remaining as interdisciplinary as possible and feel as if the skills that are learned in math are universal throughout many disciplines and very important. I would like to shed a positive light on math with children and overall make it a fun experience!

Akash, Instructor

Hello, my name is Akash! I graduated from Queens College in New York, where I received my B.A. in Economics. I have several years of experience tutoring in math, test prep and writing. I have worked with students with a broad range of learning styles. I believe that every student has their own way of understanding and learning different concepts. The past two years I’ve worked with students that have special needs and I am currently working in a special needs school as a One-to-One Aide. I look forward to helping the students of Mathnasium in improving their math skills!

Fatemeh, Instructor

My name is Fatemeh, a member of the Mathnasium of Downtown Silver Spring team. I am studying in a doctorate of Business Administration program at Temple University of Philadelphia. Although my doctorate and master's degrees will be in business, I received a bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics and have taught math at colleges and universities for four years. Learning and teaching math is one of my interests. I teach math based on each individual student's skills, for example, some students are good with analytic problems and others are good with geometry. Thus I consider those skills and try to improve their weaknesses. I enjoy teaching students at Mathnasium because it is a comfortable space for students to work.

Gabriella, Instructor

Hello All! I am Gabriella, though most kids prefer Gabby for short. I am currently a freshman in college and I am double majoring in Computer Science and Life Science. One of the reasons I enjoy computer science is because of its integration with other fields and its real-life application.  Like Computer Science, Math is very important, and it is necessary for so many other important subjects. For this reason I believe in mastering math as one of the most critical subjects will enrich our capacity to learn, as well as boost our confidence.

Kumeit, Instructor

Kumeit is an accomplished educator with 15 successful years providing mathematics, physics, history, and Arabic language tutoring. Kumeit taught mathematics to students with different proficiency levels and covered wide-ranging topics, starting from elementary school math, going through Algebra and Geometry, untill Calculus and Mathematical Analysis. He also has a solid experience in test and curriculum development, student progress evaluation, and teaching method application. Kumeit earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on the utilization of mathematical analysis in mechanical applications. He is a keen team player who enjoys solving challenges and mathematical riddles.

 Zahra, Instructor

Hello, I am Zahra Coe, one of the instructors at the Mathnasium of Downtown Silver Spring. I earned my Master's Degree in Mathematics from the university of Reims in France. I am currently working in the ESL Resource Center (CC211) at Montgomery College, Rockville. I am from a city near Casablanca in Morocco, where I was a teacher of high school mathematics. I also worked as a math tutor in the disability support services at Montgomery College for two years. My teaching philosophy is very simple. Students do not care how much you know until they know how much you care. I love working with students. They are the future and have unlimited values. Outside of work, I enjoy cooking and walking outdoors in every season. My linguistic talents include fluency in French, Arabic, and ASL.
