We’re open for business! The kids are loving Mathnasium @Home & @Center!

Our Team

Our specially trained math instructors will teach your child how to understand math in an individual setting; our unique approach enables us to explain concepts really well and lend a helping hand to every student. Our tutors foster a caring, encouraging environment that helps kids thrive and learn! Read below to learn more about our talented team:

Mr. Arup Mondal - Owner & Executive Director

Arup has a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT. While in graduate school he was a Lab/Teaching Assistant in the Electrical Engineering Department. He has a distinguished career in the high tech industry for over 20 years dealing with mission-critical process control software & systems in both Managerial and Technical positions. Arup has also tutored math and physics for many years.

Arup believes Mathematics is an important part of building a strong foundation for problem solving and success in various careers and fields for our future generation. Arup wanted to help his son (now second class at US Naval Academy) and other children in the community to stay ahead of their competition. Arup joined Mathnasium with passion and enthusiasm, and he believes that Mathnasium’s methods can change a child’s view of learning math in a positive way. With Mathnasium’s teaching methodology, Arup is very confident that children from any background or level can overcome obstacles to achieve greater success in school and in life. Married 22 years to the same wonderfully understanding, ever-patient wife, Pampa.

When asked what sets Mathnasium apart from so many other tutors and supplemental education providers, Arup states that "our [Mathnasium's] singular focus on mathematics, supported by our expert teaching staff and excellent curriculum, makes the difference. This, coupled with our philosophy of teaching in a manner that makes sense to each student as an individual learner -- all Mathnasium instruction is one-on-one; we offer no classes -- makes us unique among so many."

Arup welcomes you to meet their following teaching experts who are passionate about math, have Bachelor's/Master's degree in Science/Engineering/Education and excellent with the children. All our Mathnasium Instructors welcome the opportunity to address your student's specific needs and to discuss what Mathnasium's customized programs have to offer.

Arup owns Five Mathnasium Learning Centers - Mathnasium of Ellicott City, Mathnasium of Rockville, Mathnasium of Germantown, Mathnasium of North Potomac, and Mathnasium of Potomac.  Arup apparently likes driving on ICC a lot.

Mr. Thomas Dodelin - Regional Director & Media

Upon graduation from Gonzaga College High School in 2003 Thomas set out to direct the silver screen.  Communications seemed like an appropriate major for this goal; not to mention, his score on the AP Calculus AB exam satisfied all requisite mathematical courses for this field of study.  Instead most assignments included analyzing existing cinema for temporal context, artistic vision, and anything else that can be drawn from 1/29 of a second "mise en scene."  Rather than one cinema camera, a dolley, and reals of film Thomas found himself in the news studio with three cameras, on his feet, and instituting precision framing for most of college.  Somewhere in the middle here are multiple MCPS long term and short term substitute teaching positions; cable wrangling (the best); and a corporate 9-5.  In 2018 Thomas walked up to the corner and asked for a job at Mathnasium.  Now due to Mathnasium @Home, Thomas has found himself seated and scheduling or "directing" a camera per session resulting in over 50 camera interactions between dual participants per day.  Thomas is thankful that due to math he is able to keep directing in some way, shape, or theorem.  Let's call this one "Sit and Deliver."

Mr. John Ward – Education Director & Training

Hi, I am John and I have been working at Arup's Mathnasium since he opened his first center in 2011. I ensure that Mathnasium Style and Standards are maintained throughout our centers. I trian / re-train our Instructors in-person and also thru weekly staff meeting. I am also responsible to implement and train our people on the enrichment curriculum material for our enrichment students who needs more food for their brain!

Mr. Giancarlo (TP) - Lead Instructor

Hello, I have earned a BS degree with major in Applied Mathematics from San Juan. I have done some Bio-Engineering research in Arizona State University. I have taken various advanced math courses including Linear Algebra, Probability Theory, Calculus, Analytic Geometry, Mathematical / Applied Statistics, Multi-variable Calculus, and Applied numerical analysis. My passion for mathematics can’t be described nor quantified. My analytical and creative thinking combined with my fun and friendly personality allows me to become the beacon of knowledge needed to stimulate the minds of this generation.  When I learned about Mathnasium, I saw a way to help children learn to make sense of math and to use their math sense to solve problems in all aspects of their lives. I saw a way to help children gain confidence in themselves and their ability to tackle all types of problems. I am looking forward to meeting more children, and helping them to make sense of math and to use their understanding of math to discover the world.

Ms. Rosana (TP) - Lead Instructor

Hello, my name is Rosana and I have been a math tutor for several years. I have a Master of Science Degree in Math from Virginia Tech, where I was a Teacher Assistant in introductory math courses as Calculus, Vector Geometry and Elementary Linear Algebra. I tutored students one -on- one and I also taught math in middle school high school and college. I like to work at Mathnasium because the instruction is individualized and focused on the student’s needs. It is my passion to inspire students to improve their understanding on math and to gain self-confidence, to achieve this I lead my students to connect their knowledge with the tools necessary to solve the problem at hand through questioning and dialogue, building new knowledge in this way. At Mathnasium I have the time and atmosphere to do this. It is a great satisfaction to see my students smile and feel so proud of themselves when they grab those challenging concepts on which they have been working so hard!

Mr. Scott (TP) - Lead Instructor

Why is a calculator never convenient even though I have apps on my smartphone, my laptop and the entire internet?  Sometimes life moves too quickly to use a computer.  A store at the mall says a 20% discount on a $30 item is $4.50.  Really?  I've always liked playing with numbers, reading Martin Gardner's "Mathematical Games" column in Scientific American and I even used programmable calculators and computers to do the heavy lifting of my number crunching experiments (can you see the pattern in 1/49?).   In college I received a BA in Mathematical Sciences at Johns Hopkins University and through the years have focused on computer and network security.  Did you know to make safe and secure online purchases on sites like Amazon or iTunes, your computer uses prime numbers that are over 200 digits long?   Very smart people figured out fast ways of calculating with huge numbers!   I also like using my math skills to build electronics and robotic projects.   We all can't be mathematical geniuses (though some of you are!), but with the techniques and number "tricks" we teach at Mathnasium, you and I can easily see (WITHOUT a calculator) that the mall store's 20% discount is bad deal!

Mr. Larry Martinek - Chief Instructional Officer, Mathnasium Program

Larry has spent his entire career finding a better way to teach math. From inner city to public schools, to acclaimed magnet schools, to leading private and parochial schools, Larry has served as both a classroom teacher and as an educational consultant. He has designed curriculum, teaching strategies, and teaching materials designed to help students and teachers learn math more effectively. He has trained teachers in the art and science of boosting students' ability to “do” math, thereby increasing students' math scores and feeling of self-worth. Larry is the developer of Mathnasium’s educational program – one of the most comprehensive and innovative curriculum ever produced for teaching math. While Larry is not an Instructor at our Center, he is a valuable asset we can call on to ask about specific student scenarios for guidance, consultation and advice. This has helped to make visits more productive, life-changing and enjoyable for many of our students.
