The “COVID Slide” Will Leave Children Up to a Year Behind in Math. Mathnasium@home Can Help.
May 12, 2020
In the spring, we traditionally encourage parents to guard against the summer slide, in which children lose 2-3 months of the previous year’s math learning during the long summer break.
But this is hardly a traditional year.
Before the summer of 2020 even begins, more than 50 million U.S. families are already fighting what educators are calling the “COVID slide” — the learning loss that results from students being shut out of school for an extended period of time during the pandemic.
Many schools are still struggling to fully transition their students to remote learning. Even in situations where schools have been able to shift quickly, the student experience is largely inferior to traditional classroom learning due to technology challenges, large class sizes, or the lack of consistent access to teachers. Only a fraction of public schools offers “synchronous” instruction, which allows students to engage with educators in real time.
Math Comprehension Will Suffer Most
Under COVID-19 lockdowns, student learning is taking a beating in all academic subjects, but math is hit hardest. Most children have gaps in their math foundation even during the best of times; trying to learn math online with a classroom of other students is an almost insurmountable challenge. Parents may try to help, but the vast majority feel poorly equipped to help their child with their math studies.
The resulting frustration (and, often, tears) that families experience now is more than a short-term problem; it’s a slow-motion tragedy with long-term consequences for millions of students. Examining the NWEA’s research, The New York Times called the COVID slide “catastrophic,” saying it could sidetrack a generation.
Because math builds upon itself in layers, the number of children who are capable and confident in math will continue to fall drastically, even as educators, government and industry stress the importance of STEM-related subjects and careers.
Mathnasium@home: Live, Face-to-Face Instruction
The most effective way to remediate these learning gaps is with real-time, face-to-face instruction. Mathnasium designed its new Mathnasium@home service to do exactly that: provide the same expert math instruction and Mathnasium Method™ as in its learning centers, through any web-enabled computer. Mathnasium@home learning works with a student’s schedule and is available anywhere in North America, regardless of distance from a physical Mathnasium center.
Unlike the myriad online math learning apps and programs, Mathnasium@home provides a comprehensive assessment to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses in a student’s math skills, then builds a learning plan unique to that student. Working with that plan, highly trained instructors tutor students in a way that’s supportive and perfectly paced, so students enjoy learning math.
He actually loves Mathnasium@home … I’m so thankful. It’s one less struggle. — Sharon B.
The sooner gaps in math knowledge are addressed, the less time it takes to remedy them. That’s why it’s important that children get live, synchronous instruction to support their virtual classroom learning as soon as possible before they fall far behind due to the COVID slide.
We also recommend using Mathnasium@home this summer, so students can continue to make up lost ground, avoid the learning loss that typically comes with summer break, or get ahead for the next academic year. When local Mathnasium learning centers reopen their doors, students can continue with Mathnasium@home or easily transition to the center for the in-person experience. Either way, they’ll get exactly what they need to prevent further learning loss, reverse the COVID slide, and stay strong in math.

My son started going to Mathnasium during the summer after a year of school at home due to the pandemic. With all the students already somewhat behind, we didn’t want him to fall further behind with summer break.
After three months, he has a better grasp of his grade level in math. Most importantly, everyone there is VERY patient with him and helps him understand the concepts by teaching him visually through models.
It’s expensive for sure but worth every single penny!
Bon and his team are fantastic. They are patient and helpful. My son has commented that he understands math concepts better with Mathnasium's approach. Bon is quick to respond with any questions that I have as a parent. I highly recommend the Glendora Mathnasium location since they are communicative and keep me updated on my son's progress. I am happy I chose Mathnasium of Glendora.
The Glendora Mathnasium is the best around! We’ve referred more friends than we can count and they all agree! Their program is incredibly customized and they strike a fantastic balance between teaching new concepts while still assisting the student with current class assignments. Can’t say enough great things about Bon and his team!
I didn’t think my two kids would enjoy going to Mathnasium however after the first visit they didn’t fight me when it was time to return.
After a few appointments they actually looked forward to it and now they are a lot more confident when it comes to math. Thanks to the great staff!
A great, caring team that leverages technology to truly help their students! And they use ConexED as a conferencing option, for privacy-minded folks that do not wish to use data-siphoning companies such as Google or Zoom. Highly recommend!
We highly recommend this place!! The staff cares about the kids understanding the concepts. My son goes in with questions and come out very confident. The director Bon is very welcoming, patient and gracious. He looks at the kids on an individual basis. There's nothing I wouldn't do for my kids, this is a great investment into their future!
Very nice place, my Son only was there 2 weeks so far before this Coronavirus and places begin to close, but so far good I hope we go back to our normal life style and my son will continue to go, but very good place to take your kids
Bonn and his group of amazing tutors have helped my son and the students I have referred to exceed math goal expectations! The Glendora Mathnasium’s commitment to fully support students in better understanding mathematical concepts and to more confidently perform algorithms accurately is like no other program I have experienced locally. Bonn, thank you for creating a safe space for my son and students to learn and grow mathematically.
We really love this tutoring center for our daughter. We can bring her in 5 days a week which allows her to constantly get the help she needs. Parents get summary reports of their child’s progress which is nice. It’s a great place
The tutors were so respectful and kind to my kids. They were patient, funny, encouraging, and supportive to me and to all the students they work with. My daughter hated math with a passion when she first started tutoring, but now she feels confident in her ability to do her math. Thank you to Bon, the wonderful owner of the Glendora location. He is always willing to spend time with a concerned parent and is good about updating a child's progress. The atmosphere is bright and clean, and the kids are always engaged with their work. I love it when that the kids are able to bring a snack or a simple meal and eat it while doing their work. I'm also impressed with the fact that the tutors keep tabs on the students' break times, giving them the proper amount to rest. Its a positive learning environment, and I'm so glad I invested an entire year with this particular location.
This is our third year sending our son to Mathnasium. My son really enjoys so much learning math. Bon and his staff have so much patience teaching my son in away that he always look forward to learn more.
Great job, Bon!
I love this particular location. My kids were about one year behind in their math when they started, but in about four months they have pretty much caught up. The tutors are so supportive, patient, and respectful to the students. I love that they are consistent in their monitoring of the children's breaks and math levels. As a parent, I feel most appreciative when my concerns are addressed with compassion and patience. I have already recommended this location to another family, and they have recently started their attendance here. I intend to continue coming here indefinitely.
Awesome environment and positive atmosphere to focus on strengthening math skills! Teachers are active in class and available to help. Mathnasium is wonderful for filling in learning gaps. They teach by stage, not age!
Unlike Kumon, both of my daughters really enjoy going to Mathnasium in Glendora because it's not all about doing repetitive homework, but the materials they learn are relevant to their regular school work
I have enjoyed this particular Mathnasium so far. The tutors are very attentive to my children when they need help. They are very patient and kind when explaining different solutions and strategies to their students. The tutors also recognize when the students need a break, and so they encourage them to take it. Because of this nurturing and encouraging environment, my own kids are now feeling more confident and capable in their ability to do math. I am grateful for this Mathnasium because of the tutors. The drive is a bit out of our way, but the inconvenience is totally worth it.
My daughter had really enjoyed working at Mathnasium. It’s giving her the confidence she needs in her math skills. And filling in gaps as well! The instructors are very helpful and attentive to her needs.
This is such a good place to learn Math. The instructors are all excellent in teaching. Your math skills is sharpened here and will be improved dramatically. My son enjoys math much more at school after attending Mathnasium. This is basically a gym for brains in math and they make it fun and easy to learn. I tried many different math tutoring centers including private tutors but by far this is the best.
I cannot say enough wonderful things! My kids were overjoyed with their experience and sincerely wish we had the funds to continue. Please keep up the great work! You all are amazing!
Also, as a charter school teacher, I will continue to refer my families to your location! You may also want to consider putting together a “homeschool package” that allows students to attend 3-4 days per week for 1 hour at a time, or something similar. Most of my families cannot afford to spend all of their charter funds on Mathnasium alone, but would be willing to attend less in order to make it affordable. Just an idea! :-)
Again, we cannot thank you enough for a wonderful experience!
