Karen Flyer, Owner/Center Director
Karen’s background in marketing, advertising and non-profit management has allowed her to hone her business, leadership, and management skills, which she is thrilled to leverage as part of the Mathnasium family. Karen received her Bachelor of Arts from Duke University in 1991 and her M.B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1996.
Following business school, Karen spent five years in marketing and advertising, with companies such as P&G, an ad agency, and a jewelry manufacturer. She then moved into management, running two non-profits and, most recently, a School of Rock. Karen also owns her own college essay consulting business where she helps high school students with their college applications. Karen is excited to join the “family business” of owning and running a Mathnasium!
Karen and her husband Alan have two grown-up children, both of whom have worked at Mathnasium. Abby is a senior at Duke University and Daniel is a freshman at Princeton. Karen is also the author of two books.
Alan Flyer, Owner/Executive Advisor
Alan is a Long Island native who grew up in nearby Port Washington. He attended Cornell University, receiving a B.A. in Government and received his M.B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a father of two, Alan has been involved with the Roslyn School District for over a decade, and is currently the chair of Roslyn’s Adult Education Advisory Board. Alan and his team of instructors have been helping kids succeed in math since 2011 at the first Mathnasium Learning Center in Nassau County -- and a perennial Top Performing Center in the Mathnasium organization.
Larry Martinek, Chief Instructional Officer
An educational professional for over 35 years, Larry has spent his entire career finding a better way to teach math. From inner city to public schools, to acclaimed magnet schools, to leading private and parochial schools, Larry has served as both a classroom teacher and as an educational consultant. He has designed curriculum, teaching strategies, and teaching materials designed to help students and teachers learn math more effectively. He has trained teachers in the art and science of boosting student's ability to "do" math, thereby increasing student's math scores and feeling of self-worth. Larry is the developer of Mathnasium's educational program - one of the most comprehensive and innovative curriculums ever produced for teaching math.
Taylor Schlesinger, Assistant Center Director
Taylor Schlesinger is an empathetic, approachable, and knowledgeable instructor at Mathnasium with extensive tutoring experience. Taylor has been tutoring various levels of mathematics privately for more than 6 years, and tutored Elementary Statistics, Remedial Mathematics. Algebra, and Trigonometry at LaGuardia Community College in their Academic Peer Instruction program. Currently majoring in Statistics and Quantitative Modeling at Baruch College, Taylor can assist students at any age or skill level to help them reach their academic goals. And with her extensive background as a Customer Service Representative at TD Bank, any student who she interacts with will be left with a smile.
Divya Pahwa, Instructor
Divya is currently pursuing a Master's degree in education from Queens College. She has a very strong passion for mathematics and loves to teach. She started tutoring back in her early high school years, teaching many different students. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, but her passion for math inclined her towards becoming a math teacher. She is thrilled to join Mathnasium and wants to inspire the students to enjoy math as much as she does.
Edwin Zhu, Instructor
Edwin obtained his B.A. in Biology from Queens College City University of New York; he was also a pre-med student planning to apply to medical school in June 2021. Edwin has always had a passion along with lots of experience in teaching various subjects, utilizing the skills and knowledge that he had acquired upon finishing his rigorous pre-med track especially in the areas of advanced mathematics and sciences. It has always been a joyful experience for Edwin helping his students grasp different concepts, and therefore, he very much looks forward to working as an instructor for Mathnasium. Currently, Edwin is also working as an adjunct instructor at Queens College teaching Anatomy and Physiology.

Tiffany also served as a bank teller for JP Morgan Chase and as a supervisor at Red Mango in Fresh Meadows.
Jonathan Kim, Instructor

He has been tutoring mathematics privately for 4 years, and has also taught astrology, mathematics, computer programming, and archaeology to students at LIU Post. As a Mathnasium instructor, Jonathan hopes to teach and inspire the next generation to enjoy math as much as he does!
Karen Landy, Instructor
Karen is a 34 year veteran middle school math teacher. She retired from teaching and realized her connection to math was also her connection to kids. She loves the positive atmosphere at Mathnasium, which reminds her daily of why she loves to teach.
Karen has a way of diagnosing student needs and pointing them in the direction that works best for them, using the Mathnasium Method. As a child she realized that learning was something that needed to be presented in concrete logical ways so that others could "get it". She spent her teaching days developing different ways of understanding math skills and concepts so that every child's learning method was tapped into. She is a caring and important member of the Mathnasium staff.
