Owner/Center DirectorBruce Withycombe, Owner

By owning a Mathnasium franchise, Bruce has come full circle back to the joy of mathematics and problem solving that lead him to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Lewis & Clark College. In addition to studying Math while in college, Bruce played Varsity Football, earned extra money as a Math Tutor and was involved with student politics. After graduation he studied Actuarial Science at Georgia State University and began a career in the Pension and Retirement Plans Industry, working with consulting firms and insurance companies in that capacity. An opportunity to work in healthcare consulting moved Bruce into the Health Services Industry, where he most recently worked with WebMD Health Services as National Account Manager. Outside of Mathnasium, Bruce has 3 school aged children, which keeps things very busy with school, music, and athletic events.

Bruce has spent many seasons as a youth basketball coach, and in his spare time works as a musician, playing in multiple bands in the Portland area including Ural Thomas & The Pain  ( , Jujuba (, the Goodfoot All-Stars and the WayDowns (  Bruce is a member of The Portland Horns, who have played with national touring acts such as The Decemberists, The Violent Femmes, Spoon, Bobby Bare Jr, The Next Waltz and many others.  His discography includes credits with Jujuba, Kathy Walker Band, The Decemberists, NRVS LVRS, Jerry Joseph & the Jackmormons, Casey Neil & the Norway Rats, Point Juncture WA, Kory Quinn and a host of others.

Bruce is very excited to be opening mathematical doors using the Mathnasium method of developing number sense. He feels strongly that math skills are not only important from a technical standpoint, but also as a solid foundation of logic and problem solving skills that is not only relevant, but crucial to success in many disciplines.

Mark Durbetaki, Center Director

Mark graduated from University of Portland with a Degree in Secondary Education and History and holds a Oregon Teaching License. Both math and social studies are his teaching passions and he went on to complete his Master's Degree in U.S. History from Indiana University - Bloomington with a focus in Native American history. He has taught math, advanced math, social studies, and history in Oregon, Washington, and Indiana in classrooms at the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 10th grade as well as at the college level since 2011.  Mark has also been teaching students at the Lake Oswego Mathnasium since 2014.

He loves helping students discover how the world around them works through math and history. He also loves seeing children and young people express their personalities, grow as they gain knowledge and skills, confront their weaknesses, and learn to work with others. In his spare time, Mark enjoys playing piano, cooking, hiking, and playing board games. The hardest and most fun thing he ever did with math was build hay feeders with his dad for his parents' farm!

Veronika Eisele, Lead Instructor

Veronika, a graduate of Lakeridge High School, started out volunteering at Mathnasium in 2014 before she was hired the year after. While in high school, she studied math up through Calculus 2 and AP Statistics.  Along with math, she loves biology and anatomy and is planning on pursuing a career in the veterinary sciences field. Throughout high school she was a member of dance team, theatre, and played piano. Other activities she enjoys are cooking, hiking, going to music shows, and visiting animals. She loves to share cat stories with students in their downtime and take some time to play chess!

Lead InstructorJozef Zaragoza, Lead Instructor

Jozef is a college student at the PCC Sylvania campus, studying to become a math teacher at the middle school/high school level. He has a passion for learning and teaching Mathematics and believes in fostering strong relationships with his students. Jozef has seen many students' lives changed while they were at Mathnasium which drives him to work hard everyday. Jozef also has quite a busy life outside of Mathnasium. Jozef has been dancing for roughly 7 years, performing down and throughout the west coast for various events including Portland Trailblazers half-time shows and private Nike events. He has been playing the piano for 12 years and the guitar for 2, performing for both public and private events. Jozef is always excited to meet new students and help make math make sense!

Jamie Nevarez, Lead Instructor

Jamie graduated from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles with a degree in Elementary Education and holds a California teaching license. She was a student at Mathnasium in high school and has been an instructor since 2014. While she was away at school in LA, Jamie always looked forward to coming home to all of her students at Mathnasium!

Jamie's favorite thing about teaching is getting to know each of her students and being able to help them grow both in their knowledge and as people. The best part about working at Mathnasium for her is seeing the kids that were hesistant to signing up turn into students that genuinely enjoy coming in and are excited to learn. When she isn't teaching, Jamie enjoys dancing, cooking, and snowboarding.

Don Mason, Lead Instructor

Don has been working at Mathnasium since 2019. Don's math journey involved pursuing a degree in Math and Math Education at the University of Maryland, realizing that he would rather be an actor and singer instead, and shifting gears to work in dance, theater, music and television.

Don is now working his happiest survival job at Mathnasium. He hopes to teach students that math is not the enemy, and that an interest in math can lead to other avenues of expression and creativity!
