Our staff is built to teach each student individually, to develop the skills they need to thrive in mathematics, and to foster a love of learning.

James Sullivan

Assistant Center Director - @Home
If your student has an opportunity to work in our @Home environment, they will be lucky enough to meet James! James is one of our most experienced Mathnasium instructors, and leads all instructional staff in the @Home platform. James' educational background includes an undergraduate focus on pre-med, with some engineering courses mixed in. His attraction to math began at an early age, but has only grown as he's learned more about what has been accomplished with math. James believes that math can be appreciated through something as basic as realizing that smartphones wouldn't exist without it, to something as complex as the fascinating explanation of the physical world and it's natural forces. We are thrilled that James feels that working at Mathnasium has been one of the most rewarding jobs he's had! Getting to witness kids learn to develop an appreciation for math as their skills and confidence grow gives James hope for the future - as he truly feels that math has the potential to help solve many future world problems through its application in technology and medicine.

Shonté Carter-Fleming

Center Director
We are thrilled to welcome Shonté Carter-Fleming to Mathnasium of Laurel! With an extensive background in education, Shonté began her journey at Syracuse University, earning a B.S. in Inclusive Elementary Education. She also holds a Master’s degree in Education, specifically Curriculum and Instruction in Mathematics, from Concordia University-Portland. For almost two decades, Shonté has worked as a Special Educator, Math Educator, and Academic Coach. This includes time as a New York State certified teacher in Elementary and Special Education. Shonté hails from New York City and most of her professional career has been teaching students and teachers in NYC Public and Charter Schools. When she is not elevating students’ math skills and teacher pedagogical practices, Shonté loves spending time with her husband and daughter. Her interests include cooking, singing, dancing, and appreciating all that life has to offer. Interesting math fact: Shonté was born on the 9th day of the 9th month of the year (September) in 1981 (8 + 1= 9).

Our Mathnasium Mission

Teach children math so they understand it, master it, and love it. Math can change their lives, and they can change the world.

What I love about Mathnasium is the ability to teach problem-solving skills and make math make sense, while also making a student smile.
