We often talk to new parents about building number sense. We will take somethnig complicated, and show a simpler, mental way to do it. They will say, "It's a trick!" It isn't! It's number sense. We see kids every day who walk in and can't figure out percentages, and within an hour feel like geniuses! True story!
As bad of a rep as Common Core is getting, it is rooted in good, not evil. The structures are there to build that number sense. At Mathnasium, we just call it math - our curriculum has never waivered regardless of the way math is taught in America. We just piece it together in a way that makes sense to kids of differing grades and abilities.
Is math taught differently from when you and I were in school? Absolutely! We learned rules and didn't question why they worked. Is it different than even ten years ago? Yes! Plus, ten years ago there wasn't even a Mathnasium to go to to get the support to help your child. These are good times. The future is highly mathematical - more careers than ever will be deeply rooted in data analysis, app development, finance, programming, and engineering.
Developing strong number sense starts early! Get that ship sailing as soon as possible so the course is set for years of more complex content. Let us know if we can help! 858-335-5686
