Chris is the Owner and Center Director at Mathnasium of Alameda. Before opening his center, he served as Assistant Controller and Director at IACP Publishing (Ask.com, Dictionary.com, About.com) in Oakland. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance from San Diego State University and has over 14 years of experience in accounting, including four years as an auditor with KPMG in San Francisco. Throughout his career, Chris has been deeply involved in coaching, teaching, and problem-solving. Motivated by a growing need for individualized, targeted math instruction, he brought Mathnasium to Alameda to help students build confidence and mastery through the Mathnasium Method. Chris lives in Alameda with his wife and two sons, who attend Alameda public schools. Outside of work, he enjoys swimming and plays water polo with a masters team in the East Bay.
Jocelyn has a degree in Childhood and Adolescent Development with a focus in teaching from San Jose State University. She has over 10 years of experience working with youth in a variety of programs throughout the Bay Area. Since grade school, she has always enjoyed math, so her original goal was to become a high school math teacher. It was not until she graduated from San Jose State, that she leaned more towards the idea of teaching at college level. She is currently working towards obtaining a masters in mathematics. In her free time, she enjoys reading books from her favorite author, Stephen King, and coming up with new crafts.
Griffin is a student currently studying Child and Adolescent Development at San Jose State University. Griffin has worked with kids of all ages and has helped teach everything from math and science to the creative arts. Griffin was inspired by the educators they grew up learning from and hopes to be a similar figure to future generations. In their free time, Griffin enjoys writing, traveling, and playing games with friends.
Heidi holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics from Penn State Behrend (PSB). She has over a decade of high-level teaching experience—supporting fellow undergrads in PSB’s engineering and math tutoring centers, independently teaching an engineering design lab to PSB freshmen, and crafting personalized learning plans in her private tutoring practice.
She also brings years of experience working with younger learners, having volunteered weekly as a Book Buddy (helping third graders sharpen their reading comprehension) during her tenure as an engineer, and later teaching physics, coding, robotics, circuits, and dance/movement to 5–10-year-olds in an afterschool program.
In addition to her academic background, Heidi is a certified 220-hour Vinyasa yoga teacher and leads weekly conscious movement classes for students of all ages. She loves Mathnasium for its focus on metacognition and intuitive number sense, viewing math as a universal language that can unite people of all backgrounds. In her free time, she enjoys playing basketball, crocheting, drawing portraits, and working on her upcoming book about spirituality for the analytically minded.
Ruby is a student at Alameda High School. Her favorite subjects include Math and English. She enjoys tutoring students in both subjects. In her spare time, she likes playing soccer, reading, and spending time with her friends and cats.
Jeremy is a student at Alameda High school and his favorite classes are math and computer science. Math has always been one of his favorite subjects and Jeremy enjoys helping students with their math too. Outside of school, he enjoys playing soccer and hanging out with his friends.
Adikkya Rahman is student at Alameda Science and Technology Institute (ASTI) and is dual enrolled in the Peralta Community College System. He is striving to earn an Associate of Science in Mathematics, and an Associate of Arts in Natural Sciences before graduating high school. Adikkya previously tutored children in English, Math, and Religious Studies. His interest in Math sparked when he started seeing it as a game rather than a bunch of letters and numbers. In his spare time, he likes to develop video games, play football, hang out with friends, and learn new things.
Jonah Chan is a homeschooled student from Alameda. He has extensive experience in math, having achieved perfect scores on both the PSAT and SAT math sections, and placing in the top 25% on the AMC 10/12. In addition to math and analytical thinking, he enjoys playing the piano and exploring classical culture, including Latin and Greek. In his free time, he dabbles in music production. His favorite part of teaching—especially teaching math—is seeing the lightbulb go off on a student's face: the moment they truly understand the concept. He strives to guide students to find the answers on their own, helping them learn and apply problem-solving techniques independently.
Blue is a student at Alameda High School and her favorite subjects include math and biotechnology. She discovered her love for math in the 6th grade when she was introduced to the solving of variables. Outside of school, she enjoys acting in theatre, hiking, girl-scouts, and hanging out with friends.
Cayden is a student at Alameda High School and a former Mathnasium student with a deep passion for math and science. His love for these subjects has been evident since elementary school, and he firmly believes that math should always be fun and enjoyable. Cayden has experience working with children aged 6 to 13 as a teaching assistant at Saint Anthony’s Religious School. Outside of Mathnasium, he enjoys playing tennis and basketball, listening to music, and spending time with friends.
Ellie Cheung is a senior at Alameda High School who has loved math since elementary school, inspired by her mom’s experience teaching math. She is passionate about sharing her enthusiasm for solving math problems with others and hopes to inspire students to enjoy the subject as much as she does. Outside of math, Ellie enjoys playing badminton, traveling to new places, and exploring different cuisines.
Ethan Haitsuka is a current Senior at Alameda High School. He was placed in an accelerated math program since the 7th grade and is currently enrolled in AP Calculus AB. Outside of school, Ethan plays games with his friends and creates content for his YouTube channel (as well as doing his Calculus homework).
Turner is a student at Alameda High School. His favorite classes include Pre-Calculus and Physics. Math has always been his favorite subject ever since he learned how to utilize it to beat his friends at Magic The Gathering. He enjoys teaching math because he likes enabling students to use math throughout their lives the same way he does. Before joining Mathnasium, he received tutoring, which is what motivated him to work in that field. He hopes to major in physics. His activities include reading, building, and graphic design.
Iman has a degree in Computer Science from San Jose State University. While pursuing her education, she developed an appreciation for math, especially during the calculus series. Throughout her schooling, she took up many volunteer opportunities tutoring children in math and coding. In her free time she enjoys playing video games, cooking, yoga, and spending time with friends and family.
Alfredo Chavez holds a degree in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. His passion for mathematics and science was sparked in high school, where he participated in a program aimed at introducing underrepresented communities to the transformative power of STEAM education. The opportunities and resources from this experience inspired Alfredo to pursue a path in engineering, and he is now eager to apply his skills and knowledge in the field. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, coding, reading, and playing various types of games.
Kevin is a student at Alameda High School with a strong passion for his favorite subjects, math and science. His enthusiasm for math sparked in 8th grade, and he believes it should be both fun and accessible for everyone. Outside of academics, Kevin enjoys biking, playing baseball, and spending time with friends.
TJ Huang is a student at Alameda High School, currently enrolled in Honors Precalculus. He is an active member of the school's leadership program and has experience tutoring English Language Development (ELD) students. TJ discovered his passion for math in elementary school, where early experiences sparked his lasting interest in the subject. Since then, he has found math both fun and intellectually engaging. As a former Mathnasium student, TJ believes that math should always be enjoyable and accessible. Outside of academics, he enjoys 3D printing, playing video games, and spending time with friends.
Anujin Otgonbayar is a student at Alameda High School. Her favorite subjects are math and science. In her spare time, she enjoys playing volleyball and reading. Anujin has experience tutoring other high school students in math and science through the ELD Task Force program at her school.
Abid, a senior at Alameda High School, developed a passion for teaching at a young age, stemming from helping his friends with their math homework. His favorite subject is math, and he particularly enjoys algebra. Outside of school, Abid plays basketball, participates in theater, enjoys video games, and spends time with his friends.
Katie Leung is a senior at Alameda High School who will be studying Biology at the University of California, Los Angeles. While math has consistently been her strongest subject, it was her Algebra 1 teacher's praise for her hard work and encouragement of her self-belief that truly solidified this understanding. This experience inspired her to want to help other students appreciate math and recognize their own capabilities. Outside of academics, she enjoys watching sitcoms and going to cafes with her friends.
Ivan Saldivar is a student at Alameda Science and Technology Institute (ASTI) and is also dual enrolled at the College of Alameda. He developed an affectionate relationship with math throughout middle school and nurtured that passion ever since. This led him to pursue tutoring kids at Love Elementary School, where he also grew to enjoy teaching. Aside from his academic pursuits, he enjoys long-distance running and spending time with friends.
Karen is a high school senior who will be attending UC Berkeley in the fall. Her favorite subject has always been math, and she has tutored peers in AP Statistics. Beyond academics, she is actively engaged in her community through volunteer work. In her free time, she enjoys shopping, playing badminton, and drinking matcha.
