Word Problem Wednesday: Music and Math

Math Summer Camp North Las VegasMUSIC and MATH go together like peanut butter and jelly! In fact, Albert Einstein once said “If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.” Today’s Word Problem Wednesday demonstrates one simple way musicians use math.

Help Isaac figure out how many guitar strings he’ll need over the next 4 years.

Isaac replaces the six strings on his guitar once every 3 months. How many new guitar strings will he need over the course of 4 years?

Solution: Since 3 months goes into 12 months 4 times, Isaac replaces 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 24 strings in one year. In four years, he replaces 24 + 24 + 24 + 24 = 96 strings. So, Isaac needs 96 new strings.
