Meet Julia H., One of Our Amazing Birmingham Instructors

Families who walk through our Birmingham Mathnasium doors are often greeted by the friendly smile of Julia H. She’s one of the talented instructors who help students grow their confidence in math every day. We recently caught up with Julia to learn a little more about what inspires her and what she loves most about teaching.

A Favorite Math Concept

Julia loves teaching “up to and over multiples of tens.” Why? Because it’s a powerful mental math strategy that helps students see number relationships in a whole new way. When kids learn to think in tens, math starts to click—and calculations become faster and more intuitive.

Fun Factor Favorites

If Julia could plan her own “Fun Factor” activity for our center, she’d bring back sticker day. She loves watching kids decorate their binders with math puns and clever designs. It’s a simple way to celebrate learning while adding a bit of personality to math time.

Talents Beyond Numbers

When Julia isn’t helping students, she’s making music. Not everyone knows she plays piano, a hobby that beautifully connects rhythm and math—two languages that share patterns and precision.

Pre-Shift Treats

Her go-to snack before work? Pizza. Julia often stops by Papa Romano’s next door for a quick slice before her shift. (A perk of working so close to great pizza!)
