AI can solve problems quickly and give practice. That helps once you already understand an idea. But research shows just getting AI answers does not always build the same learning as working with a real instructor.
In a large PNAS study (Bastani and others, 2025) with nearly 1,000 high school students, those who used unrestricted AI scored higher during practice. When the AI was removed, they scored about 17% lower on a regular test than students who never used it. The AI acted like a crutch. A version that only gave hints avoided this problem.
Face-to-face instruction still builds stronger understanding for students your age. An instructor notices when you’re stuck, adjusts on the spot, and helps you see *why* an answer works.
Sample Problem
You have 3 large pizzas to share equally among 4 friends (including yourself). How much does each person get?
The calculation is \( \dfrac{3}{4} \) of a pizza. AI gives that number instantly. Face-to-face teaching helps you see why it makes sense:
1. Drawings — The instructor sketches the pizzas, divides each into four parts, and shades one share so you literally see each person gets one quarter from each pizza.
2. Manipulatives — You move paper slices yourself and put the three quarters together to feel and see they make one complete three-quarter share.
3. Socratic questions — The instructor asks: “What fraction of one pizza is each person getting?” “Does that match when we put the pieces together?” “What if we had 5 friends?” These make you explain your thinking while the instructor adjusts in real time.
A study of nearly 8,000 elementary students found adaptive programs helped a little, but the teacher’s role stayed essential. A 2026 Brookings report concluded that over-relying on generative AI currently risks kids’ deeper learning more than it helps, especially when it replaces human conversation.
Face-to-face instruction uses drawings, manipulatives, and questions so you understand why the math works. AI can be good extra practice afterward. The strongest learning still happens with an instructor right there helping you see it for yourself.
