Glad you asked! Let’s take a sneak peak inside your local Mathnasium of Cedar Rapids and ask their instructors!
Q: What helps students in your center stay motivated?
A: Students love earning points when can be used to buy things from our reward cabinet. Students also love getting to play games that help them strength their math skills. We also have a monthly activity for students who work hard or complete mastery checks.
Q: Tell us about the reward cabinet!
A: Who knew squishmellows were so popular! Our reward cabinet has something for everyone, whether they'd like a squishmellow, a whoopie cushion, an action figure,a quadcopter or some candy!
Q: How do students earn prizes from the reward cabinet?
A: Students earn stars for each page they complete. Stars can also be earned by playing games (boosters) and participating in the activity of the month. Stars are converted to points based on a students Mathlete level (For mathlete level 3 15 stars = 1 point). Our rewards range from 1 point for small things like candy and slime to 85 points for quadcopter drone.
Q: How does your center celebrate student success?
A: We celebrate all wins, big and small. Students often receive high fives for right answers or extra stars for working hard. Students who answer all questions right on their mastery checks receive a round of applause from the staff and their peers. Student success is also celebrated through our quarterly red-star winner. Students work hard to earn chances to put their name onto our red star list. Each quarter a winner is selected at random to receive a prize (like an amazon gift card or table tennis set)!
Q: What is your favorite student success story?
A: Every student who walks through our doors grows, so every student is a success story. For some, math was a struggle but now it's fun. For others, math has always been easy, and Mathnasium gives them the opportunity to enjoy math and extend their learning. For example, we have a first grader who was initially assessed at grade level, less than a year later, he's working two grade levels ahead and is currently learning multiplication! Most importantly he still enjoys math!
