This year, Teacher Appreciation Week is being celebrated from Monday, May 6th - Friday, May 10th. We work alongside our students’ teachers throughout the year to fill in gaps and provide support - and we couldn’t be more appreciative of their efforts. Let’s shower our teachers with all of the appreciation they can stand!

Hold a family story time and talk about your time in school - and the teachers who helped you succeed! Your kids will love to learn more about your childhood, and this can be a great bonding opportunity.

"Mr. Emswiler was my 6th grade teacher and he was the BEST! You could tell he was so passionate about his students and really wanted them to succeed. For me specifically, he really encouraged me to try to be the best I could be, and noticed I was at an advanced reading level. His wife was a 1st grade teacher at the same school and he asked if I would be interested in going to her class every few days to help run their reading time! I did and it was AWESOME. I still have a love of reading as well as public speaking (I ended up doing competitive speech in both high school and college) and I really still do attribute this to him. The fact that he found ways to build confidence in his students and build a foundation for future success was so inspiring, because of him I also try to do this with our students as well!"

"My favorite teacher growing up was Mr. Legrand. He was my band teacher from 5th grade all the way to high school. When I was younger I had just moved to Manassas Park and started at this new school. I've never played an instrument but knew I loved music. I took a music test and passed with flying colors. And once that happened my band teacher took me under his wing and taught me everything about music. That then lead to me being one of the top instrumentalist in our district. Even to this day we keep in contact."

"My favorite teacher is Prof. Barr, he was my Differential Equations professor during my junior year in college. He was great at explaining difficult topics and he always made sure we were all on the same page. He had long office hours and encouraged us to come by with any questions. ""My AP Physics C: Mechanics teacher Ms.Wells is the actual greatest of all time and the best teacher I've ever had. She teaches each concept well, always checks if the class understands, makes sure to spend more time on concepts the class struggles with, and walks around to the tables when we're working problems to answer any questions we have. She emphasizes collaboration between students to figure problems out on the class/homework and during test corrections, but is always willing to help when we're stuck. She also holds AP exam review sessions after school every day because we're close to the exam, and the practice MCQ and FRQs we do in class are really helpful too.
Not only is she outstanding academically, but she also cares a lot about her students. Her AP students are primarily seniors, and she supported us through the college application process by reminding us to get started on our essays, informing us on the different types of applications, writing recommendations for students she had the prior year, and giving supportive words to the class after the UVA and VT early action decisions came out. I also asked her for tips on what to look out for when I was doing college visits, and she helped me with my list of questions. Additionally, she consistently asks for and takes feedback about the workload. She asks how long it took us to do the homework to determine if she's giving a good amount, has opened review problem sets early so we're able to fit them better into our busy schedules, has extended due dates to allow us to focus on college apps, and more. If we have a concern, we know that when we bring it to her we can count on her truly considering it. Before each test she also stresses to us that it's more important to get a good night's sleep than to stay up late studying. She really values us as people more than just as students, and it's incredibly appreciated. With the total eclipse this year as well, she wanted to have a field trip to take her 2 AP classes to see it in totality, and while the field trip didn't end up working out, the fact that she tried means a lot.
