Our staff is built to teach each student individually, to develop the skills they need to thrive in mathematics, and to foster a love of learning.

Matt Karstens

Curriculum Coordinator

After graduating from Baylor, Matt went on to Sewanee and UTC to earn his Bachelor's and Master's Degree in mathematics. Matt has been working at Mathnasium since 2017 and loves his job - to unlock the mysteries of mathematics for students who far too often have believed they might never understand. In addition to teaching, Matt is responsible for overseeing the learning plans of all students so that they are balancing the dual objectives of getting caught up while also staying on top of current coursework. In Matt's free time, he enjoys inventing games that illustrate mathematical concepts for students, sharing recreational math puzzles with coworkers, and writing.

Marybeth Fall

Education Director
Marybeth has a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Georgia Southern University. Before "marrying in" to Mathnasium in 2020, she taught kindergarten and 2nd grade. Marybeth trains and coaches all Mathnasium instructors. It is one thing to be good at math yourself, but it is another to be able to communicate math concepts to students in a way that makes sense to them. Not only does this require exceptional understanding of the content, it also requires that tutors be able to form relationships with students so that they are more inclined to listen and to trust them. Beth's true joy is to coach new instructors to ensure they are able to be their best for our students - she is very proud of the fact that many of our instructors go on to become teachers themselves after discovering the joy of teaching at Mathnasium.

Andrew Hicks

Instructor

Andrew graduated from Collegiate High School at Chattanooga State in 2022. He was salutatorian of his class and received the Chattanooga State 4.0 GPA Award. Now he is working on getting his Bachelor's Degree in computer science at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. In his free time, Andrew enjoys reading, computer programming, playing chess, and pretty much anything that involves learning and getting better.

Kai McFarland

Instructor

As a mathematics major at Chattanooga State, Kai spends her time investigating the limits of how many lines are needed to span a plane, and how many credit hours can fit into one semester. Kai came to Mathnasium in 2024 looking for an opportunity to show others the most elegant graphs that math has to offer, and to manipulate them on graphing calculators live for students. Kai is at her happiest when she gets to make challenge problems for students, to help bridge the gap between one topic and the next. In her free time, Kai enjoys composing music and practices competitive fencing.

Brad Chambers

Assistant Center Director

Connoisseur of puzzles and languages, Brad is a student of Computer Engineering and French at the University of Tennessee - Chattanooga who wishes that he could take even more math classes. Brad started at Mathnasium in 2023, bringing along with him his cheery attitude and desire to help others succeed. He’s been tutoring his classmates in math since the age of 16, and credits his love of numbers to his math major mother. In his free time, Brad likes to complete sudoku puzzles, solve Rubik’s Cubes, and write music.

Belle White

Instructor

Belle graduated from Cleveland High School and is currently attending UTC as a physics major with a mathematics minor. Her career goal is to work in a physics laboratory. She often helped her classmates and siblings with math subjects in the past and is excited to continue sharing knowledge into the present and future. She loves helping kids with math because of how essential it is to every other part of their education.

Celeste Wilson

Instructor

Celeste graduated from MTSU in the spring of 2024 with a Bachelor's in Psychology, and plans to pursue a Master's in Clinical Psych. With a strong passion for math, Celeste is excited to help others understand and feel confident in their own math skills. This love for education arose during high school, when a local elementary school needed volunteer math tutors; that experience showed just how rewarding it is to help kids learn and to see them so proud of themselves and their progress.

Alex Martinez Patino

Instructor

Alex is currently attending the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, studying Mechanical Engineering, aspiring to be in the motorsports scene. Being one of his toughest subjects early in elementary school, Alex had many great teachers assist him in mathematics, showing him the joy of the subject. Since then, he has enjoyed mathematics, and loves to share techniques that have benefitted him in elevating his knowledge in the subject. In his free time, Alex spends most of his days juggling his classes and homework, hanging it with his friends, and his hobby of distance running.

Our Mathnasium Mission

Teach children math so they understand it, master it, and love it. Math can change their lives, and they can change the world.

What I love about Mathnasium is the ability to teach problem-solving skills and make math make sense, while also making a student smile.
