Below are a few key skills your child will need to ensure they are off to a great start this fall:

Place Value

Counting by 10s, 100s, and 1,000s.

Identify ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands places.

Understanding that "32 ones is the same as 3 tens and 2 ones," for all numbers up to 1,000.

Read and write whole numbers up to 1,000 in standard form.

Rounding: "Is 371 closer to 300 or to 400?" to the tens, hundreds, and thousands place.

Proportional Thinking

"If two pieces of gum cost ten cents, how much will six pieces of gum cost?"

"Recyclers pay 7¢ for every 3 caps. How many caps are needed to get 21¢? How much are 9 caps worth?"

Algorithm for Subtraction of Whole Numbers

Subtracting single-digit numbers in column and vertical formats.

Subtracting three–digit numbers with and without "borrowing" ("regrouping," "trading") in column formats.

At Mathnasium, we can help ensure your child is ready for 2nd grade math! We take an sequential and logical approach to teaching math. We will teach your child number sense by helping them understand how numbers work and build their numerical fluency (the ability to effortlessly recall addition and subtraction facts).

Each student has a custom learning plan based on the results of written and verbal assessments unique to Mathnasium. Their learning plan will help close knowledge gaps they may have and make it easier for your child to jump ahead when they’re ready for more math challenges. The Mathnasium MethodTM teaches for understanding rather than memorization so that your child is ready for whatever comes next in math class!
