Why Our SAT prep program is right for you!

Jun 9, 2023 | Commack
  • The SAT is “the big one”--the test that colleges use to determine a high schooler's preparedness for higher education. While different colleges weigh SAT scores differently, the higher your score, the more options you have when applying, both for school choice and academic scholarships!
  • Just as you wouldn't take any test in school without preparing for it, you shouldn’t go into the SAT blind! The slightest difference in score can drastically change the doors that open for you.
  • You can readily find free sample test questions and courses that offer practice tests online. We don’t discourage students from seeking those out if they have the time and energy!
  • However, studying practice problems alone is not enough for many students; not only will they have to teach themselves content that they’re already unfamiliar with, but they’ll also be unprepared for the many aspects of test-taking! Consider these:
  • Why should you look for an SAT prep program?

  • Real test practice: Some online resources have good content to go over to prepare for concepts found on the SAT. But no matter what they know, the length and feeling of the tests can be overwhelming!
  • Test anxiety: Being ready with the material but blanking during the actual test is one of the worst feelings for students. The SAT is a foreign environment that throws many students off. Being put into a classroom with unfamiliar faces and a tense atmosphere can make anyone anxious, especially when their future is on the line.
  • Unfamiliar material: Consider your student's schedule when planning for the SAT. A typical student who is at grade level will likely be taking the SAT around the time they are in Algebra 2/Trig (their junior year). However, this can be a challenge--the SAT covers lots of Algebra 2/Trig content, but you student will be in the middle of the course! Your student needs to be prepared by seeing the content ahead of time and knowing what to expect and do when they encounter unfamiliar concepts.
  • Timing: The SAT has a strict time limit for every portion of the test. It is important for students to practice this timing so they can pace themselves appropriately!
  • Test-taking skills: Alongside knowing the material itself, students must know how to navigate a multiple-choice exam with maximum efficiency. Students can increase their scores just by knowing and effectively using test-taking skills!
  • So why our SAT program?

  • Teachers, parents, and just about everyone else actively discourage cramming as a studying technique. It just isn't efficient! So why are there so many SAT programs that emphasize full-day boot camps? And that’s usually on top of a lengthy drive.
  • At Mathnasium of Commack, we take a different approach to SAT preparedness. Through one-on-one instruction in a small group environment, we focus on both the test material and the underlying foundational concepts that they are based on.
  • Program details:

  • For the first thirty minutes of each session, students take portions of real SAT math tests. Why just 30-minute blocks? Students won’t be in the best state of mind for learning new information if they’ve just taken a test for a few hours. So when we want students to focus on the concepts and minutiae of the test, we make sure they’re mentally primed for learning!
  • After this, we’ll spend some time honing their test-taking skills. We’ll discuss the best ways to filter out “bad” answers, make the most of unfamiliar content, and interpret questions with confusing phrasing. These details might seem small, but they have a big impact on scores!
  • Finally, we’ll go over foundational math topics to make sure our students’ math skills are up to par. Just taking practice tests won’t cut it if you want your student’s scores to improve--working on the foundations of math for each student is important as well! By assessing their mastery of Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry concepts, we can pinpoint the exact material they must cover or relearn in order to do well.
  • Students are assessed on a specific battery of concepts that we know will be present on the SAT. Based on that assessment, we’ll create a learning plan that’s customized to meet their exact needs, down to the concept! Students in our SAT program get access to our amazing proprietary curriculum, the best tool around for learning and locking in key math concepts!
  • Our awesome instructors tie the whole program together--they are the top of the top cut of tutors! The select few who pass our rigorous employment test have exceptional academic backgrounds and are more than capable of teaching the SAT.
