FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Mathnasium about?

Mathnasium specializes in math-only instruction with a focused, caring, and fun learning approach that delivers results. We will first assess your child to understand his/her math skill level and how it lines up with their current grade level. Then we create a custom learning plan for him/her based on the assessment and where your child needs to improve. Every three months your child is reassessed to gauge not only mastery and progress but retention of the concepts and skills we have taught.

How does the Mathnasium program work?

We have 2 different membership packages 7 months and 12 months, as well as a month to month option. Each month you will have 10 sessions to use, which means your child can come into the center 2-3 times per week.

How long are the sessions?

From Pre-K to Pre-Algebra, the sessions are 1 hour long. The first 30 minutes is dedicated to working on the Mathnasium curriculum, and the last 30 minutes is to help with any math homework your child may have. For Algebra and higher, the sessions are 1.5 hours long, with 45 minutes spent on the Mathnasium curriculum, and the last 45 minutes on homework help. If your child doesn’t have homework, then the entire session will be dedicated to the Mathnasium curriculum. We understand that pre-school aged children will not have homework and do not have the attention span to do math work for a full hour, therefore the last 30 minutes are spent playing math games or working on a math related activity.

How are the sessions scheduled?

Upon enrollment, you will receive an email from Appointy-M to schedule your child’s sessions. Sessions must be scheduled at least 12 hours in advance.

Does it need to be the same time and day each week?

No, scheduling is flexible. You can schedule your 10 sessions any way you see fit. As long as there is an open slot available on Appointy, you are welcome to schedule your child’s session. Please keep in mind that sessions do not roll over to the next month so we encourage our families to schedule sessions for their child at least twice per week.

What is a hybrid model?

We are a fully digital center. Therefore, your child will be using a tablet to work on his/her curriculum during the session. If your child is not able to come into the center on a scheduled day, he/she can still attend the session from home using our virtual platform.

Is the Mathnasium program private tutoring?

Although we offer private tutoring, our Mathnasium program is not a private, however our instruction is always one-on-one AND instructors are able to work with a small group of students simultaneously. Our instructor sits in the center of a "pod" of up to three students, each working on different math concepts. She/he bounces from one student to another, constantly checking in, teaching briefly and then allowing time for individual practice as opposed to hovering constantly (which causes tutor-reliance syndrome). This teach-and-move method allows students to get the instruction, nudging and independent practice they need to build math self-confidence.

How do you make the experience fun for my child?

  1. We play games! Many games are useful instructional tools that help children become better critical thinkers and problem solvers.
  2. We celebrate their wins! Our in-center rewards system provides kids encouragement and motivation to keep working on their curriculum and master the principles. Each session provides them with opportunities to receive rewards—big and small—for their efforts.
  3. We have fun Math activities throughout the year! No matter the time of year, Mathnasium has an activity to match. Pi Day is a big deal at our learning centers, as it provides a fun and meaningful opportunity to celebrate math. Our centers celebrate the seasons and holidays with themed activities.
  4. It’s a bright and fun learning environment! One of the best ways to reinforce math’s fun side in our centers is to surround students with a playful and engaging atmosphere. We do that with whimsical wall-art characters, learning materials, brain teasers and quick mental math pieces in bright, lively colors.
