FAQ
The SAT® math section tests four content areas:
Algebra
Advanced Math
Problem-Solving and Data Analysis
Geometry and Trigonometry
In Algebra, students will encounter linear equations, linear functions, systems of equations, and inequalities.
Advanced Math questions focus on quadratic, exponential, polynomial, and other nonlinear equations and functions.
Problem-Solving and Data Analysis questions usually include ratios, rates, percentages, probability, and interpreting data.
Geometry and Trigonometry questions may involve area, volume, lines, angles, triangles, circles, and right-triangle trigonometry.
The main differences between the ACT® and SAT® math sections are in the scope of topics, question formats, and timing.
Math topics: Both tests cover algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. The SAT® puts most of its weight on algebra and advanced math, while the ACT® spreads questions across a wider range of topics.
Format: The SAT® is adaptive. Its second math module gets harder or easier based on how students perform on the first. The ACT® math section has one fixed set of questions.
Question types: The SAT® includes some questions where students enter their own answer, while every ACT® math question is multiple choice.
Scoring: The SAT® math section is scored from 200 to 800, while the ACT® math section is scored on a 1–36 scale.
Allotted Time: The SAT® gives students 70 minutes for 44 questions, about 1 minute and 35 seconds per question. The ACT® gives students 50 minutes for 45 questions, about 1 minute and 7 seconds per question.
Calculator Policy: Both tests allow calculators on every math question. On the SAT®, students can bring an approved calculator or use the graphing calculator built into the digital test.
The range of topics and structure of questions will help students decide how to best prepare for each test based on their strengths and learning style.
A good math score on the SAT® depends on the student's college goals and the schools they're applying to.
The SAT® math section is scored on a scale of 200 to 800 and makes up half of the total SAT® score, which ranges from 400 to 1600.
For Georgia students, a total score of 1200 is a key benchmark. It's the minimum SAT® score for the Zell Miller Scholarship, along with a 3.7 HOPE GPA and four rigor credits.
Students applying to more selective colleges should check each school's published SAT® score ranges and set their target from there.
Ultimately, a good score is one that aligns with the admission requirements of students' desired schools.
