Finger Counting | Unfriendly numbers

There are so many great things kids can do when they understand what 10 really means.  We can jump from one magnitude to the next, we can move decimals back and forth and probably the most foundational use of 10 … curing finger counting!

We teach our kids to understand what needs to be added to a number to make 10.  When they have effortless recall of these number facts, finger counting takes a major backseat and the kids can use it as a foundation for things like 10 + a single-digit number.

How???

For example, my Goddaughter seems to like to hear …

“How far apart are 8 and 10?”

Instead of

“What is 10 minus 8?”

Try the see-saw diagram with the little ones.  They’re fun, they can be creative and they’ll learn complements of 10 and breaking a number into smaller pieces.
