Estimation is the act of finding an approximate answer; number sense is the intuition that makes that approximation possible.
Before a child calculates, number sense gives them a feel for where the answer should live. Think of it as an internal compass for mathematics.
Number sense supports estimation through three specific mechanisms, each building on the last.
The first is magnitude awareness. A student with solid number sense reads 498 and instantly thinks "nearly 500" rather than processing three separate digits. That mental rounding is the engine of estimation.
The second is benchmark referencing. Anchor numbers like 0, 0.5, 1, or 100 become natural reference points. When adding 0.45 and 0.80, your child's number sense signals that both values sit close to or above one-half, so the result must be greater than 1, before a pencil touches paper.
The third is error detection. Once an estimate is in place, it becomes a filter. Knowing that 49 × 3 should land around 150 makes a result of 1,470 an immediate red flag. Number sense is what makes that answer feel wrong immediately, prompting them to look again rather than move on.
Together, these three mechanisms give your child something procedural fluency alone cannot: a sense of whether their thinking is on the right track.

Before the pencil touches paper, a child with strong number sense already has a feel for where the answer should land.
Numbers are not random. They relate to each other in consistent ways, and children with developed number sense begin noticing this naturally. Those observations become some of the most useful tools they have when solving problems.
Some patterns are numerical. Your child may notice that every multiple of 9 has digits that sum to 9: 18 (1 + 8), 27 (2 + 7), 36 (3 + 6). Or that multiplying any number by 10 simply shifts its digits one place to the left. These are windows into how our number system works.
Other patterns are relational. Say your child forgets what 7 × 8 is. A child with well-developed number sense might think, "I know 7 × 7 is 49, so 7 × 8 is just one more group of 7; that's 56." They reconstructed a forgotten fact using a relationship they already knew.
The patterns children notice in early math turn out to matter well beyond elementary school.
A study in mathematics education shows that a student's sense of patterns, their ability to notice, test, and generalize, is one of the foundations from which algebraic thinking grows.

Educational researcher Thomas Carpenter and his colleagues found that students who compute flexibly demonstrate deeper conceptual understanding than those who rely on a single learned procedure.
In other words, the student who owns the numbers never really gets stuck.

Flexible computation gives students the tools. Strategy selection is knowing which one to reach for.
This is the metacognitive layer of number sense, or the ability to look at a problem and ask, "How should I approach this?" before committing to a method:
Should I estimate or calculate exactly?
Is there a pattern I can use here?
Would drawing this out help?
That pause is judgment in action.
Consider the problem 15 × 24. There are several ways in:
Long multiplication, working column by column
Breaking it into (15 × 20) + (15 × 4) = 300 + 60 = 360
Recognizing that 15 × 24 is the same as 15 × 8 × 3, since 24 = 8 × 3
A procedurally trained student reaches for long multiplication every time.
A student with solid number sense scans the numbers first, spots that 24 breaks apart cleanly, and picks the path that fits. Same answer, smarter route.
