An Introduction to the Classroom Tools
Best Practices
Internet Browser
- You must use either Google Chrome, Safari or Firefox to access the online classroom.
- Google Chrome is preferred.
Internet Connection
- If your computer can be plugged directly into your home’s modem, that will provide the most reliable experience. However, a room with a solid wi-fi connection generally will be sufficient.
- Do not try to connect from a coffee shop or other public wi-fi.
- A good rule of thumb is to check if you can stream videos (Youtube, Disney+, Netflix, etc.) without lag. If you can stream without any issue, you should be able to run @Home!
Devices
- ConexED is designed to work best on a laptop or desktop computer.
- You may use iPads, but we recommend using a stylus pen.
- Some laptops with restrictions do not allow our platform. If you are logging on with a school-provided laptop, it may not be able to load the classroom.
Your Student’s Set Up
- If possible, students should use headphones with a microphone. This will limit “echoing” and ensure the instructor can properly hear the student and vice-versa.
- Students should be in a quiet area free from background distractions and noise.
- If headphones with a microphone are not available, earbuds or other headphones make an adequate substitute.
Homework Help
- If your student needs homework assistance, please ensure their homework has been emailed to [email protected] at least 12 hours before your scheduled session.
- If your student receives online homework, the ConexED classroom is equipped with a screen-share feature to easily share the webpage with their instructor.
- Please contact the center if you have any questions about the homework process.
Scheduling in Advance
- @Home sessions must be scheduled at least one hour prior.
- Sessions are based on a “first come, first served” availability.
Running Late
- If a student is late logging in, their session end time cannot be changed or extended.
- Please start the login process a few minutes early to allow time for computer updates or unexpected errors.
Backseat Teaching
- Please do not provide additional instruction or give students answers during their session. This may cause confusion for a student and impact their understanding of the material.
Where to Direct Questions
- Just like in the center, the instructor working with your student will be working with others as well. To ensure the highest level of instruction for all Mathletes, please contact the center directly with any questions about their material or progress.
Troubleshooting
Refresh
Refreshing the browser resolves many platform problems.
Check the Internet speed
- Go to speedcheck.org
- Recommended measurements:
- Minimum Upload 20 mbps
- Minimum Download 10 mbps
- Latency less than 40 ms
- Stability rating greater than 80% for both Upload and Download
Use Screen Share & Take Screen Captures
- This will allow you to share what you are seeing with the instructor and they can better guide you toward a solution.
- Take screen captures of the entire screen to send to the Center Director.
Verify Permission Settings & Browser Extensions
- Check to make sure the browser is allowing audio/video connections.
- Check to see what browser extensions are enabled - you may need to turn off some browser extensions such as Ad Block Plus.
- Check for any browser updates that may be pending.
- Check Parental Control Software and Virus Protection allow the website.
- Try another email account - Google family accounts of school accounts may block the site.
Restart the device and verify all updates are installed
