Brian Burtner
Lead Instructor
Brian is an experienced STEM tutor at Frederick Community College, recently graduated from Hood college (B.A.), with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Actuarial Science (he has a particular love for probability, statistics, and optimization). Since roughly 2011, he has helped fresh-out-of-high-school undergraduates and adult learners alike overcome the structurally inherent pedagogical shortcomings of the public school system to achieve functional literacy in college-level algebra and beyond. For his work in this field he was declared Maryland 2017 Student Employee of the Year by the Northeast Association of Student Employment Administrators. Brian knows that developing good ‘number sense’ is the critical first step to self-sufficiency in mathematical problem solving – and the Mathnasium method is laser-focused on this goal!
William (Bill) Sonnenberg
Instructor
Bill graduated from Frostburg State University with a bachelors in mathematics and minor in education. Following graduation, Bill worked as a classroom teacher of 8th and 9th grade mathematics in Prince Georges County public schools. After several years, Bill accepted a position as a statistician with the US Department of Education. During this time, Bill also spent his spare time tutoring high school and college mathematics, including SAT test preparation. Bill retired from the US Government in 2022 and now looks forward to assisting students at Mathnasium.
Kiluwe Mbuyu
Lead Instructor
Kiluwe is a Wesleyan University graduate with experience as a tutor, classroom teacher, and undergraduate teaching assistant. He has a great love for mathematics and a desire to show students that math can be beautiful and fascinating as well as useful, drawing connections between mathematical structures and the patterns we encounter in science, art, music, and everyday life. His experiences working in education have given him a unique appreciation of Mathnasium’s individualized approach to student development, and he is committed to building students’ mathematical fluency and their confidence in their own abilities through the Mathnasium method!
Karen Highland
Instructor
After graduating from the University of Florida, Karen taught math for 25 years. After a second career in real estate, and retirement, boredom soon led her back to her first love, teaching math. Karen holds the belief that a strong foundation in mathematics offers numerous benefits to students, helping them succeed in both academic and real-world scenarios. Apart from opening doors to STEM subjects and the career opportunities they hold, math success brings several life-long benefits: boosted self-esteem and confidence, better critical thinking skills, analytical and problem-solving skills, financial literacy, and better decision-making skills. The unique individualized teaching approach at Mathnasium fits well with Karen's passion for preparing students to succeed in life.
Ella Silovich
Instructor
Ella is a current senior at Frederick High School (2025) and is looking forward to graduating and starting her studies of law and political science in college. Ella enjoys connecting with the community through volunteer work, learning ASL, and studying mathematics. As a previous student of Mathnasium, Ella has learned the importance of number sense and building a strong foundation for math, along with the fulfillment of helping others.
Ian McIntosh
Instructor
Ian is a junior at Governor Thomas Johnson High School. Ian was a student at Mathnasium when he was in the accelerated 6th grade program in middle school. He started working at Mathnasium since May of 2024. In the first two years of high school, Ian was a member of chess club and Model UN. He is currently studying AP Calculus AB as well as AP computer science principles. He has been a cellist since the age of 9 and is still playing at 16 and is considering studying music and math together in college. In his time of working at Mathnasium, he has found the most valuable thing is to help students gain new perspective of mathematics.

Mathnasium provides premium value by combining a superior learning experience with an efficient structure that keeps costs low. There is a flat enrollment fee for our program, and students attend regularly—much like a gym membership. We recommend that they attend Mathnasium 2-3 times per week as attending less frequently will slow results and attending too often could lead to student burnout. Pricing varies by program and geographic area. Contact our center for more details on enrollment packages.
We use the Mathnasium Method™, a proprietary teaching approach which combines personalized learning plans with proven techniques to build math knowledge upon what students already know, so they're able to retain what they learn and gain confidence along the way.
No. All learning occurs under the efficient and effective guidance of our trained instructors. Adding homework would risk frustration and overload. In fact, we'll set aside some time each session to help your student with their school homework.
