Sofie Alaya

Lead Instructor

Sofie graduated from MIT in 2019 with a degree in Comparative Media Studies, focusing on digital interactive media in education. She loves math and science and is especially drawn to Mathnasium because of how it teaches concepts from fresh, new perspectives.

As Lead Instructor at Fresh Pond, Sofie thrives on helping students connect the dots and gain confidence. In her free time, she enjoys playing and developing video games, exploring local theater, learning languages, and creating art.

Scott Reding

General Manager

Scott holds a B.A. from the University of Southern California and a master’s degree from New York University. He brings over a decade of teaching and tutoring experience across all ages, from elementary students to college undergrads.

Scott’s favorite part of teaching is building a strong conceptual foundation and witnessing that “aha” moment when a concept finally clicks. His goal is to make math feel intuitive and rewarding for every student.

Julie Lee

Director of Operations

Julie has a strong background in education leadership and was the first Education Director at Mathnasium of West Newton before pursuing her Master’s degree. Now back in the Mathnasium family, she brings experience, passion, and a deep commitment to helping students thrive.

Her favorite part of teaching is watching students experience those “lightbulb moments” when they realize that math is not just useful, but also beautiful and fun. Julie is also passionate about connecting math to everyday life and building lasting relationships with students.

Myrtha Chang

Franchise Owner

Myrtha holds a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master's in Information Technology from MIT. After a successful consulting career with Oracle, she opened the first Mathnasium Center in Massachusetts, driven by her desire to make math accessible and enjoyable.

Originally from Singapore and a parent in Newton, Myrtha understands the community’s high academic standards and values. She’s proud that Mathnasium offers a supportive environment where kids want to come, because here, math finally makes sense and learning is truly fun.
