Today, our education specialists will share three practical ways to support math homework, even when your child is using a method you did not learn, along with a simple routine that helps you guide them without replacing the classroom approach.
If you learned math by memorizing a formula or certain rules and practicing them until the steps became familiar, your child’s homework may look different to you.
In Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), students may be asked to show what the math means before relying on a familiar shortcut. Your child may be asked to:
draw a model to show how the quantities relate
use a number line to visualize the steps
work with place-value blocks or another representation
explain why the method works before using a shorter procedure
Eureka Math, which MCPS uses in elementary school, places explicit emphasis on conceptual understanding as well as procedural fluency. So when you sit down to help, you may recognize the math problem but not the method on the page.
That mismatch can feel even bigger if you learned math in another country or language, where the notation, vocabulary, or preferred steps may also have been different.
The math itself has not changed. Your child may simply be learning to represent and explain it in a different way. When you understand what their method is designed to show, it becomes much easier to support their thinking without replacing the approach they are using in class.
You can support your child’s math homework even when you learned math in a different country, language, or school system.
Your role is not to reproduce the teacher’s exact explanation or solve the problem for your child. Instead, help your child make sense of the current method, and explain the mathematical idea behind the task.
To do that, the practice guide by the Institute of Education Sciences recommends:

connecting representations to notation
helping students monitor their reasoning
Although this guidance was written for teachers, the same ideas can provide a useful framework for parents during homework time.

Use whatever words make the math idea clearest for your family, including a language other than English. You can talk through the quantities, relationships, and reasoning in the family’s strongest language, then connect important terms to the English vocabulary used at school.
Research on bilingual mathematical reasoning (1983) by Dawe suggests that a solid math foundation in your child’s first language can help them reason through math in English. They will still need to become familiar with key English words that describe math ideas and logical relationships.

You can start with a few questions that invite your learner to do the thinking:
“What are you trying to find?”
“What information do you already have?”
“What could you try first?”
“How could you check your answer?”
Their responses can help you pinpoint what is getting in the way:
They may be unsure about the classroom method,
an English math term,
what the problem is asking,
an earlier concept the task depends on.
These questions also keep your student involved in solving the problem instead of asking them to copy a method that may differ from the one taught in class.
Research on parent homework involvement also supports avoiding unneeded controlling help. According to 2023 meta-analysis by Jiang et al., children tended to perform better in math when parents offered encouragement and guidance. When help became overly controlling or intrusive, achievement tended to be lower.

The math methods you learned may still be useful to your child as points of comparison. By looking at two approaches side by side, you can help them notice what the methods have in common and build more flexible mathematical thinking.
You might say:
“Your method and the one I learned look different. Let’s see whether they lead to the same answer.”
“I learned multiplication with a written algorithm, while your array shows the numbers as groups. Where can we see the same multiplication in both methods?”

Look at the size of the numbers, the units, and the relationship described in the problem. If the task involves a diagram or equation, ask whether the final answer matches what the representation shows.
For example, if your child places −3 to the right of 2 on a number line, ask: “Does the point’s position match the value of the number?” Since −3 is less than 2, it should appear to the left.
