John Hong Assistant Center Director at Mathnasium of Garden Grove & West Grove

Q: What school are you attending and what are you studying?

I graduated from California State University, Fullerton in May 2019 with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Mathematics with a concentration in probability and statistics. I am currently attending the same school and am enrolled in a Master's of Science program for Statistics. I am also working as a Teaching Associate for the Math Department. I have plans to either go into data science or teaching at a university level once I graduate from my program. You can see that math takes up a huge portion of my life.

Q: How long have you been working at Mathnasium?

I have been working at Mathnasium since May 2017.

Q: As one of our most experienced instructors, what do you enjoy the most about teaching here?

Observing the progress all the students is what I enjoy most out of everything I like about working here. Regardless of their age and math proficiency, seeing how much improvement each student makes gives me a sense of satisfaction. Seeing instructors with different backgrounds and goals come together for the same purpose of helping our students is also great.

Q: What is your favorite topic or course to teach?

This is a very hard question because I find almost all levels of math to be fun, especially those at Highschool levels. If I really had to pick, I would have to say two-column proofs in geometry. I love the way logic is necessary to do proofs.

Q: I see you are big on math, do you have any fun math tricks or jokes to share with us?

No. To me Math is serious.

Q: I see... What about a fun fact about yourself then?

Although I lived in the United States longer than I have in Korea, I still think in Korean on many occasions. I enjoy keeping up with Korean Entertainment and Kpop news. However, BTS is not my thing... It will never be.
