Sarah Townsend Assistant Center Director at Mathnasium of Garden Grove & West Grove

Q: On your team bio it says you are going to Chapman to pursue a degree in music education with a minor in math, what are your plans after?

Yes, I am currently a junior at Chapman. After graduating, my plans after are to receive my teaching credential and a Master's in teaching and then work full time at a high school.

Q: How long have you been working at Mathnasium?

I have been working at Mathnasium for about two and a half years.

Q: As one of our most experienced instructors, what do you enjoy the most about teaching here?

The best thing about working as long as I have is being able to see the growth in the students that I've worked with since I started. There are many students that started with us around the same time that I did, so I had the opportunity to learn and grow with them over the years. This is an opportunity that most educators don't have as they typically have a year with their students and I don't take that for granted.

Q: What is your favorite topic or course to teach?

My favorite topic to teach is Number Sense. This is essentially the fundamentals of math and counting and includes putting quantifiable values to numbers. It may sound strange, but it tends to be the most difficult topic to teach among all of the instructors because most of us don't remember learning it. This is my favorite because I love a good challenge and being able to start from the ground up with students.

Q: Why did you choose Mathnasium?

I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. I found Mathnasium because there was one down the street from my childhood home and math was always my favorite subject in school. I actually remember telling my dad that I wanted to work there when I was about 12. As soon I as was old enough to work and my schedule allowed it, I started working here.

Q: What do you like to do outside of work?

I am a musician! With music education as my major, I am passionate about the integration of performing arts in education. At school, not only do I have many opportunities to perform, but I am also gaining the tools I need to be the best teacher I can be.

Q: I love music! What do you play?

I started out playing the drums when I was 11, piano when I was about 15 and now I am a vocalist.

Q: What type of music do you play?

Mostly "classical" music for school. My school is a conservatory, so we focus on Western music throughout history.

Q: Can I watch you play?

I do performances at school all the time! If you're interested, I would love to tell you about them.
