Through my early schooling, I would often get frustrated and anxious when it came to the subject of math, but with help and dedication, I have grown to appreciate it with a better mindset. Now I hope to spread the usefulness of math in real life situations with other students and show that it doesn't have to be so scary.
I enjoy spending time with family and friends, being outside and active, baking, listening to music, and reading books. Seeing our Mathnasium team help students become more comfortable with math and improve their grades in school makes me happy :)
Favorite number: 8. It’s simple looking, it’s an even number, and this was my favorite age!
Fun Fact: My favorite animal is a panda because they are cute and cozy!
Education: I am currently a senior in High School participating in the Running Start program, so I have been taking college classes for about two years now and I hope to get my bachelors in cyber security after High School.
Why I love Mathnasium: It truly is a helpful place for students of all ages and mindsets. Mathnasium's system of working with students has proven to help them succeed and get ahead. You can't get Mathnasium's unique strategies and procedures anywhere else!
Data Wong is a one-year-old rescue dog. She loves the occasional visit to Mathnasium to provide moral support to new students who haven't realized how fun math is yet. She also enjoys bacon, the dog park, and her family, and she hates squirrels. Her dream is to someday be a therapy dog.
Jillian is the Owner and Center Director of Mathnasium of Kennewick. When she isn't in the center, she loves hiking and exploring with her rescue dog, Data.
Favorite number: 0. Can you believe numbers existed for so long without this very important symbol for nothing?!
Education: I earned my BA in Biology and Neuroscience from Grinnell College before attending Iowa State University for my PhD. Including my postdoctoral research at Northwestern University's medical school, I spent nearly ten years studying the development and differentiation of retinal ganglion cells (the cells that connect your eye to your brain). However, my favorite part of grad school was teaching university-level classes, so I decided to move on to a place where I could spend more of my time teaching -- leading me to Mathnasium!
Fun Fact: I used to have a rescue hedgehog! I also spent years picking up and studying individual neurons before I started teaching math. :)
Why I love Mathnasium: I truly believe that Mathnasium's common-sense approach to math understanding is critical for learners at all developmental stages. I love that we don't rely on memorization or repetition, and we instead work to make math make sense to our students with personal support, caring instruction, and real-time feedback. This helps students face academic challenges without fear, so that they reframe learning as an opportunity as opposed to a source of frustration.
Teach children math so they understand it, master it, and love it. Math can change their lives, and they can change the world.
Are you interested in changing lives through math? We're looking for outstanding individuals with a high level of commitment who are passionate about teaching math. Find out if there's a Mathnasium position that's just right for you!
