Common core standards, and “life” in general, requires students to build automaticity with math facts. Beginning with addition and transitioning to subtraction in the kinder through second grade window, then moving on to multiplication and division from 3rd to 5th grades. It is presumed that mastery with expeditious accuracy is reality before middle school as the student inches their way closer and closer to algebra.
Think of math facts as sight words! If a student has to fight through things that should be simple (“The cat fell off of my lap”) to get to the meaning of the story, how can they enjoy it or understand it? The same applies to the standards in math. These are our sight words. We need to keep the calculations effortless so the energy is focused on the problem solving. Gone are the days of pure memorization.
