The Advantages of Summer Math Instruction

As the end of the school year is fast approaching, your child may have visions of the swimming pool, amusement parks and getting to stay up past their bedtime. Summer is typically characterized as the time when your child can set their schoolbooks to the side, only to be picked up and dusted off again the night before the first day of school. However, it's important that your child's math instruction doesn't take a vacation.

We don't always actively integrate math into our children's daily life as we do with reading or other subjects, making it easier for your child to fall behind in math during the summer. Having a dedicated plan to focus on math by enrolling your child in a math enrichment program will prevent learning gaps and help keep your child on track. With your summer schedule being a bit more relaxed, it will be important to create intentional ways to incorporate math into your summer routine and it is possible for your child to enjoy their summer break away from the classroom without giving up on learning completely.  Let's talk about a few reasons why you should enroll your child in a math program this summer.

A Defense Against Learning Loss

Although some learning loss is to be expected during the summer, with the shift from classroom to virtual learning this year because of the COVID, that learning loss has already begun.  The summer months offer a crucial opportunity to fill in some of those learning gaps your child likely experienced in math during the year. Enrolling your child in a structured math enrichment program for the summer can help ensure they start the new year ahead and not behind. As the proverb says, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". Taking the steps to address any learning gaps over the summer will ensure your child goes back to school feeling confident and prepared.

Provides Meaningful Interaction

Attending a physical summer camp may not be an option this year and you may be having difficulty finding a safe alternative.  A math enrichment program can provide educational, fun, and worthwhile interaction with fellow students and instructors. Your child will be able to keep their brain engaged and challenged, while making new friends and meeting their social and academic needs. Instructors will be able to guide your child through relevant activities that fit with their grade level and knowledge level. The scheduled learning sessions will also provide a routine for your child, helping to make the transition back to the regular school year a little less painful in the Fall.

If you've had to serve as a stand-in teacher this school year, you are very familiar with your child’s challenge areas and you may be concerned your child may be at risk of falling behind. Or you may be worried your child is not being challenged enough and is at risk of losing interest in math. A summer enrichment program will allow you to outsource this important responsibility to someone else who is qualified and can give you peace of mind that your child is still getting the assistance they need if they are struggling or receiving more advanced instruction to keep them motivated.

Makes Math a Priority

During the school year, your child must balance multiple subjects, along with multiple homework assignments and projects. This can make it difficult to focus on improvement while they are having to maintain in all areas. Focusing on math instruction while school is out, encourages your child to dedicate their energy solely to their math goals without the added pressure of having to multitask. At our Mathnasium center, we are math-only! Your child will be fully immersed in math to improve their skills and self-confidence.

Learn from Anywhere

One thing we have learned during this COVID pandemic is the value of being able to learn virtually. If you plan to get back to traveling this summer, your child can still participate in a math enrichment program while away from home. Our Mathnasium center offers live online instruction at no additional cost so your child can learn even if you're unable to attend our center in person. Whether it’s from your beachfront hotel room or Grandma’s house, all your child needs is a computer with an Internet connection.  We understand that life is flexible, and plans change, but you can still prioritize providing your child with quality instruction over the summer.
