Question: Jenni had a quarter, 2 dimes, 2 nickels, and 7 pennies. If she bought an eraser for 42¢, how much money does she have left?
Answer: 20¢
Note: To find how much money Jenni has left after buying an eraser, we first need to find how much money she had originally. Because of the Law of SAMEness, in order to find the total value of the coins we must first find the value each coin then add the values together.
1 Quarter + 2 Dimes + 2 Nickels + 7 Pennies = 25¢ + 20¢ + 10¢ + 7¢ = 62¢
Jenni had 62¢ and spent 42¢. So,
62¢ – 42¢ = 20¢

Question: With the money in her piggy bank, Brittany bought an ice cream cone for herself as well as her best friend. If she had 6 quarters, 7 dimes, 10 nickels, and 22 pennies, how much money will she have left over if an ice cream cone costs $1.15?
Answer: 62¢
Note: To find how much money Brittany has left over, we first need to find how much money she has. Before adding all of Brittany’s coins we first need to apply the Law of SAMEness and find the value of the coins.
6 Quarters + 7 Dimes + 10 Nickels + 22 Pennies = $1.50 + $0.70 + $0.50 + $0.22 = $2.92
Brittany bought 2 ice cream cones; one for her best friend and one for herself. If one ice cream cone costs $1.15, then by doubling the price of one ice cream cone we find that two ice cream cones cost $2.30. Brittany has $2.92 and she spent $2.30. So,
$2.92 – $2.30 = $0.62 = 62¢

Question: Curtis’s car gets 32 miles per gallon at 55mph and 24 miles per gallon at 65mph. If Curtis drove 10 miles at 55mph and 15 miles at 65mph, how much gas did Curtis use? Round your final answer to the nearest hundredth.
Answer: 0.94 gallons
Note: Curtis drove 10 miles at 32 miles per gallon and 15 miles at 27 miles per gallon.
10 miles ÷ 32 miles/gallon = 0.3125 gallons used
15 miles ÷ 24 miles/gallon = 0.625 gallons used
0.3125 + 0.625 = 0.9375 gallons = 0.94 gallons

Question: A van traveling at 72 miles per hour passes a car traveling 60 miles per hour. After 10 seconds how many feet ahead of the car is the van?
Answer: 176 feet
Note: Find how far the car and van travel per second.
Van:
72 miles/hour ● 5230 feet/mile ● 1/60 hours/min ● 1/60 min/sec = 105.6 feet/sec
Car:
60 miles/hour ● 5230 feet/mile ● 1/60 hours/min ● 1/60 min/sec = 88 feet/sec
After 10 seconds:
Van: 105.6 feet/sec ● 10 sec = 1056 feet
Car: 88 feet/sec ● 10 sec = 880 feet
Now we find the distance between the two vehicles and we find that the van is 176 feet (1056 – 880) ahead.
