Elise L
Lead Instructor
Elise hails from just outside Minneapolis and is a math major at UW-Madison. As a high school student Elise distinguished herself by graduating with a 4.2 (on a 4.0 scale), receiving her high school’s Math Department Award for being her school’s “top” math student, and earning a National Honors Society Scholarship helping her financially to attend UW. While in high school Elise worked in conjunction with her school’s advanced math teachers to provide tutoring to her peers one hour each school day. Finally, Elise was a starter on the varsity soccer team and worked at Starbucks 10 hours per week. This girl got a lot done!
Elise’s focus at UW is “statistical analysis and risk management”. She plans to have a career in actuarial sciences and while at UW has already successfully completed two of the very challenging professional actuarial exams. She also plans to graduate from college in three years. This young woman gets a lot done!
We are thrilled she has the time to share her love of math and teaching with our students.
Emily A
Instructor
Emily is from Brookfield Wisconsin. She graduated from Brookfield H.S. with a perfect 4.0 GPA and a love of chemistry. Emily successfully completed every AP math, chemistry and biology class Brookfield High had to offer.
Emily accepted an ACS-Hach Land Grant scholarship to attend UW-Madison. This scholarship is awarded to UW undergraduates majoring in chemical sciences and that has an expressed interest in teaching high school chemistry after college.
Now working on her masters in Curriculum and Education at UW’s number one in the nation rated school of education, Emily:
Has been a researcher on UW’s ChemLEAP program, studying tools and practices to facilitate learning of chemistry in school
Was hired by UW’s Chemistry department as a private chemistry tutor working with UW undergraduates studying chemistry
Was a tutor within UW’s Athletic Dept. providing math/chemistry support to UW’s scholarship athletes
Participated in the “Badger College Educational Assistant Program” which enabled her to assist in several Madison area high and middle school classrooms while an undergraduate
Emily’s extensive tutoring / teaching experience and love of teaching has made her an outstanding Mathnasium tutor.
Caleb S
Instructor
Caleb is from Madison and has worked part time at Mathnasium as a tutor since he was a junior in high school. Now a sophomore at UW-Madison, Caleb is studying electrical engineering. Caleb graduated Middleton high school with a 4.0 GPA……he is slacking off a bit lately, through his freshman year at UW- Madison he only has a 3.98 GPA.
Caleb’s academic achievements have earned him several scholarships including; Kemper Knapp National Merit, Richardson Engineering and National Merit.
Caleb’s natural ability to teach and connect with students has been noticed by many Mathnasium participants…..it is often the case that when students come into the Learning Center they immediately ask “is Caleb working today?” When asked “why are you so good at tutoring” Caleb’s general reply is that “it just comes naturally.” That is a really good explanation, especially given the fact that Caleb’s father is a full professor and researcher of mechanical engineering at UW…..the apple does not fall far from the tree.
Matthew H
Instructor
Matthew is from Grayslake, IL and is currently enrolled at UW-Madison, working toward his under graduate degree in physics.
As a high school student Matthew was a varsity tennis player and the founder of his school’s chess club.
While a high school upper classman Matthew’s love of math and science attracted him to a job as a tutor at a Mathnasium location in Chicago. That is when Matthew discovered his fascination with different learning styles and his love of hearing students say “I get it now!”
Matthew now devotes his free time to tutoring at Mathnasiums of Madison. When he is not at Mathnasium, Matthew expands his learning as a member of a research team at UW’s Physic Department’s Plasma Research Group. Matthew’s fascination researching “the fourth state of matter” has him planning to attend graduate school to pursue a graduate degree in physics.
Caroline M
Instructor
Caroline is originally from Bettendorf, IA, where her passion for math blossomed during high school. She excelled in AP Calculus AB and served as an officer in the National Honor Society while also tutoring middle school students. It was during this time that she discovered a second passion—working with children.
Now a junior at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Caroline is pursuing degrees in Economics and Mathematics. She continues to tutor through Badger Volunteers and AmeriCorps’ “Achievement Connections,” and has interned with WI State Senator La Tonya Johnson. Caroline hopes to pursue a graduate degree in Public Health Administration.
Derek W.
Instructor
Derek comes from an academic household—both of his parents are tenured professors of math and engineering at UW–Madison. Unsurprisingly, he rose to the challenge and graduated from Middleton High School with a perfect 4.0 GPA and a perfect ACT score of 36. He completed Calculus ABC and also took college-level math courses at UW during high school.
His tutoring experience began in his senior year, when he served as an in-class tutor while auditing math courses. Derek brings both mastery and relatability to Mathnasium, helping students feel empowered by the subject that’s always been part of his life.
Theresa N.
Instructor
Theresa, originally from Barrington, IL, is an Elementary Education major with minors in Mathematics and Environmental Studies. Her high school curriculum allowed her to explore teaching early on through classroom assistant work, which solidified her goal of becoming an educator.
She has taught students around the world—from interning in Ecuador to tutoring Afghan refugees through World Relief USA. At UW, she has volunteered as a teacher’s aide and worked on habitat improvement projects. A Campus Ambassador for the Peace Corps, Theresa is known as “Ms. T” at Mathnasium and is a student favorite for her energy and kindness.
