Mathnasium of Marana's Top 5 Moments!

1. Our favorite “aha!” moment with a student.

A: We had a student recently learn the "cake method" for figuring out the greatest common factor between two or more numbers. They were quickly able to master it after some explanation, and as a result, when it came time to employ the method again for least common multiple, they had no trouble applying it!

2. A time when a student earned a reward.

A: We had a couple students who want some squishmallows focused hard on their pages and completed several a day in order to claim their prizes! They were both happy to earn the squishmallows and we were impressed at the quality of their work, as well as, how quickly they were able to advance!

3. Positive parent experience.

A: Recently, we were informed by one of our parents that their daughter, who has been coming here for a few months, recently became a "Math Expert" at her school! We are all very proud of the student's achievement!

4. Favorite ways to teach concepts.

A: One thing I, as a Center Director, enjoy doing is socratic questioning. Instead of telling a student straight-up how to do a problem such as "50% of 400", I'd say, "Well, what's 100% of 400", wait for their answer, then ask "okay, if 100% of 400 is 400, then what's 50%?" If they're still stuck, I'd bring up how 50% is the same as half, and re-ask the question as "what's half of 400?" When they answer "200", I'd follow-up with "if 1/2 of 400 is 200, then 50% is also..." which the student quickly answers!

5. A time when a student scored well on a test.

A: A student here was tested on geometry concepts at school and managed to score a 90% on their test! As a reward, we gave them a free Nerds Rope which they enjoyed during their session that day.
