Teacher Appreciation Week is almost here, and at Mathnasium, we’re getting ready to recognize the incredible teachers who help our students learn, grow, and reach their potential every day.
Celebrated during the first full week of May, this special week gives us the perfect reason to thank the educators who have made a lasting difference in our lives. As the National Education Association (NEA) reminds us, these are the people whose efforts leave an enduring mark on their students.
A Collaborative Mission
At Mathnasium, we’re proud to work alongside classroom teachers. Together, we ensure that each child gets the help they need to succeed in math, whether it’s reinforcing concepts or addressing specific learning needs. Teachers have shown amazing resilience in recent years, tackling new challenges with energy and empathy. We admire their commitment—and we’re showing it with a week full of appreciation.

💭 Stories from the Mathnasium Team
We’re also sharing personal stories from our instructors about the teachers who shaped them. Here's one we love:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
My most impactful teacher was Mr. Bowe, who taught 3rd grade at Ashland Elementary. He came in as a replacement for our original teacher after she unexpectedly left for the year and made a HUGE impact on not only the students in our class, but even many students outside of ours as well. He always found fun ways to connect with students during recess and in class, making learning fun and exciting and rewarding achievement like no other teacher. He came up with a multiplication game called "Around the World" which played a major factor in my love for math and my development in math, as well as other subjects. His teaching method clicked greatly with my natural competitiveness and propelled me to score the 2nd highest overall average SOL scores in the entire county for my grade which produced a higher learning path that I benefited greatly from.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
My favorite teacher is Ms. Ray, who taught 7th grade science at Belville Middle School. Ms. Ray made learning science fun! Not only that, she ran the drama club that had no budget. We made sets with volleyball nets and chairs and performed amateur written plays that could be gotten for free and she made it feel magical.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Mr Dr Warne was my favorite teacher! He was fantastic to work for, he taught algebra and was incredibly positive when it came to teaching. One of his big goals was to use theatre to introduce math to students and using visuals to explain concepts. My favorite memory is walking down the quad and seeing him about to pass me, only to stop and realize he was holding a bunch of arrows (not the ones for archery) of various sizes. Apparently, he was about to teach a lesson on vectors and wanted visuals for the students!
-Malia, Mathnasium of McLean
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Mr Kauffman was my favorite teacher for 10th grade Algebra II at Hayfield Secondary School. He was extremely dedicated to making sure every student understood each topic, spending time in lunch and after school to ensure success. He made math fun and enjoyable
-Lisa, Mathnasiums of Alexandria City and Mount Vernon
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
My most impactful teacher was my middle school Algebra 1 / Geometry math teacher Vern Williams. His passion for teaching math the right way and giving the students challenging & engaging problems really solidified my lifelong love of math. He always called up students to the blackboard (never a whiteboard!) to give them a chance to explain how they solved a problem which made the classroom experience much more fun and interactive.
-Billy, Mathnasium of Reston
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
My favorite teacher is my high school Math teacher for Geometry and Algebra 1 Mrs. Royster! As i struggled through Geometry, she showed me the way to go about two colum proofs. She was always by my side and did not give up on me. She also helped me see math is not bad but rather fun. She was the reason why I wanted to go into education and find a way to help students find the love of math. and to this day I still keep in contact with her, and when I feel like I need some kind of motivation I know I can turn to her and ask her for advice.
