Here’s Why Staying Engaged with Math Over the Holidays is Essential

Nov 11, 2024 | Mooresville

As the busy holiday season rolls around, many of us shift focus to family gatherings, celebrations, and well-deserved breaks. It’s a wonderful time of year, and we at Mathnasium know how valuable these moments are for building memories. But we also know that when it comes to math, consistency, and ongoing engagement are critical, even during the holiday months. That’s why we encourage our students and their families to stay committed to their math journey through Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the New Year.

Here's what we recommend:

  • Encourage your child and explain the value of regular attendance at Mathnasium.

  • Set a regular schedule by setting up recurring appointments using our scheduling software.

  • You should attend sessions at least twice weekly. Ask your Center Director about Mathnasium@home for days you might be traveling or can’t make it into the center.

  • Reach out to obtain progress updates; we’re here to help and answer any questions you have

  • Incorporate math into holiday activities: Look for ways to weave math into daily life, such as measuring ingredients for holiday recipes, calculating travel times, budgeting for gift shopping, etc.

  • Discuss math goals for the new year: Encourage your child to set personal goals. This can create a sense of purpose and motivation to work toward something tangible.

  • Bring a friend to Mathnasium: Some children are more engaged when they can share their experience with a friend. Reach out and schedule a Trial Session for a friend. Don’t forget about our $100 Referral Reward!

  • Reward your child appropriately for their commitment to staying engaged and progressing here at Mathnasium.

At Mathnasium, our goal has always been to do much more than help kids muddle through their homework assignments like a traditional tutor might. We’re here to provide a solid foundation in math – to help your child master the essential skills they need to thrive. This is the time to catch up, fill in any gaps, and reinforce what they’ve learned so they can start the new year confident and ready to dive into new concepts.

When December comes, kids are usually diving into their most important grade level material in school. Having their foundational skills in place will make the transition to new topics easier and far less overwhelming. At Mathnasium, we focus on identifying and addressing specific areas of need for each student. We’re dedicated to creating a customized learning plan so children can master the material that’s essential for their success, not just tackle their immediate assignments.

It’s important to remember that our work here isn’t just about solving today’s homework problems. Our mission is to develop math understanding and confidence that will benefit children long term. Every family that joins Mathnasium is entering a partnership, a shared commitment to helping kids develop the skills and confidence they need to excel, now and in the future.

For families with enrolled children, we want to encourage you to take advantage of the holiday season as an opportunity to reinforce math skills, even in small, enjoyable ways. By keeping up that consistent engagement—even just an hour or two a week—your child will be better prepared to tackle new content come December and beyond.

Our team is here to ensure every student feels equipped, supported, and ready to succeed. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to your child’s math journey. Let’s work together to build a foundation that will support them in school and in life. After all, math is a lifelong skill – and we’re thrilled to be a part of helping your child master it.
