Q1: What types of progress have you seen students make this summer?
A1: Many of our students are using the extra time during the summer to wrap up their current learning plan and get started on some new topics in preparation for the new school year. Previewing some of the upcoming math has helped our students build confidence and work through challenges before the next year of math begins. Some of our students who really benefit from this additional learning gain are students taking Summit program classes or other classes with a large jump in difficulty. These students are able to solidify their current knowledge and build new skills as they prepare for fast-paced classes.
Q2: How does your center help students stay motivated and engaged during the summer months?
A2: Every day at Mathnasium has fun rewards and incentives, but during the summer, we hold special opportunities to win punch cards and cash in for extra prizes. Every day on our fun calendar, students have opportunities to earn additional awards. Each month, we have challenge passports, and students who complete each passport earn extra punch cards to trade in for extra rewards!
Q3: Why is summer such a valuable time for building confidence in math?
A3: Summer isn't just a valuable time for building confidence; it is absolutely crucial. Many students associate math with stress, deadlines, and struggling over letter grades. The summer is a great time to detach from the day-to-day struggles students go through and focus on the learning for the sake of learning. Students can have positive, low-stress experiences with math all through the summer. On top of this, students tend to lose 1-2 months of math knowledge over the summer, creating a stressful situation when they return in the fall. Preventing that Summer Slide helps students feel confident and consistent when they return to school.
