This month we interviewed Lulu and her mom, Sere, to learn more about their experience at Mathnasium of Napa.

Lulu has been attending Mathnasium since 2022. She is currently 10 years old and is in 5th grade at Pueblo Vista Elementary. Both Lulu and Sere are very happy with Mathnasium and foresee this relationship lasting a long time.

What is your favorite part of Mathnasium?

Lulu: I really like that every time I go there I learn something new and then when I go to school I get good grades.

What is your routine when you go to Mathnasium?

Lulu: I go twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays. My mom drops me off, then I go in and grab my binder. Then I eat my snack I brought from home, grab a pencil and go to my favorite spot. My favorite spot is the second to last row in the back, I always sit there.

What is something that you really like about the Mathnasium Method?

Sere: I like that Mathnasium emphasizes going back to older material and showing how it relates to new material. At school, they typically teach the topic and then move on. At Mathnasium they focus on providing a full understanding and a strong foundation.

How do you feel about math now, compared to when you first started at Mathnasium?

Lulu: I struggled a lot in math in 3rd grade but Mathnasium has helped make my grades go up! After a while my teacher even said “Wow, you actually understand math!” I was really happy about that.

Why did you seek a math tutoring center?

Sere: A friend of mine in the Bay Area swore by Mathnasium and wished that she had started her son in the program much earlier. He started in middle school and is now in high school. It has helped him excel in math whereas that was not a strong subject before Mathnasium. Lulu was struggling and I thought Mathnasium would be a quick fix, two years later we are still at Mathnasium and she is excelling in math and enjoys attending her tutoring sessions. She sometimes asks to stay longer when I come to pick her up, so they must be doing something right!

How do you feel about the assessments?

Lulu: Assessments are hard because it’s new information and it is just hard. But I learn a lot when I do them, and I’m now at the top of my grade level!

What is your favorite topic within mathematics?

Lulu: Multiplication - at first it was hard, but now it is interesting for me because when there are new problems I know how to solve them. Math shows you that there are so many ways to go about seeing and solving things.
