Our staff is built to teach each student individually, to develop the skills they need to thrive in mathematics, and to foster a love of learning.

Alex Guppy

Alex received his Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Kalamazoo College in Michigan. Shortly after graduating, Alex moved abroad to teach English in Taiwan - an adventure turned odyssey that lasted the next six years. When he was not teaching and having fun with his students, he was exploring the mountains and streams of the island. Eventually, home called and Alex returned to the States in 2013. In the Fall of 2014, Alex visited Chattanooga for a rock-climbing trip. As the season passed by and frost began to accumulate on his tent each morning in Prentice Cooper State Park, Alex contemplated returning home to Michigan for the holidays, but then applied for a center director position at Mathnasium on a whim. He cannot help but look back on his humble beginnings as a math tutor here in amazement. At the beginning of 2018, Alex became the sole owner of both Mathnasiums in Chattanooga and has since gone on to open or purchase three more in Williamson County. Alex is honored by all of the parents who have entrusted the safety and education of their children to him over the years to help him realize his dream of owning his own business. He is looking forward to providing math homework help to many more children in the coming years as he works hard to provide a wonderful experience for his students and reach their full potential in math.

John Neal

John is from Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Tennessee Knoxville, while majoring in Political Science and minoring in Mathematics. He has been taking a gap year before law school and started working for Mathnasium in November of last year. Further, he will be attending Vanderbilt Law School this upcoming fall. John first started tutoring people while in high school. He joined the Mu Alpha Theta (“MATH”) club during his senior year and began tutoring fellow students in Algebra I, II and Geometry. Later in college, he tutored several of his peers in Calculus I and II and, he would also lead small classes over various subjects in Calculus. After college, he privately tutored students in Algebra I, basic Calculus, and Calculus until he joined Mathnasium in November of 2022.

Anne Gump

Lead Instructor
Anne has worked as a professional chemist for Vanderbilt University and the Tennessee Department of Health. She discovered that her favorite part of these interesting jobs was math! She went back to school to study Advanced Mathematics and Mathematics Education. She has been a tutor with Mathnasium since 2019 and loves watching students discover something new each day! Anne's favorite math joke is "Why shouldn't you let math scare you? Because it's easy as pi!" A fun fact about her is she made a perfect score on the math portion of her ACT! Some of Anne's hobbies are playing the piano and cooking new and interesting recipes.

Marcus Stuedemann

Marcus is an undergraduate student at Middle Tennessee State University pursuing a bachelor’s in history and minor in mathematics and a minor in secondary education and teaching licensure. He enjoys math because he used to tutor his peers in high school and loved seeing them achieve. Marcus's favorite formula in math is the Pythagorean Theorem, a^2+b^2=c^2. His favorite math pun is "Math is nothing 2b^2 of". One fun fact about Marcus is he used to run a movie theater in the Green Hills area, and he has met Batman.

Our Mathnasium Mission

Teach children math so they understand it, master it, and love it. Math can change their lives, and they can change the world.

What I love about Mathnasium is the ability to teach problem-solving skills and make math make sense, while also making a student smile.
