Let's talk about homework - FAQs

Math homework can be a challenge for students – and it can be stressful for parents who try to help them!  We get asked a lot of questions, and we’d love to hear more from you.  In the meantime, these are some of the most frequently asked questions.

What should I do when I can’t help my child with their homework?

Sometimes parents just don’t have the time to help their children through all of their homework.  For others, helping students can be difficult if parents learned different problem solving methods when they were younger.  At Mathnasium, our instructors know all the different ways to solve math problems in grades 1-12.  They can help your child how to do their homework in the way they are taught at school, while extending their understanding of the underlying concepts.  This is called the Mathnasium Method.  With our kid-friendly approach at Mathnasium, students are encouraged all the way and gain confidence to do their own work.

My child is bored with math homework.  What do I do?

For any student, repeating the same types of problems over and over doesn’t help much – and it is actually boring!  Students that say they are bored with math may be trying to cover for other struggles, such as not understanding the material and concepts.  Advanced students may not be challenged enough.  At Mathnasium, we can work with any student, regardless of their current math abilities.  We make math fun, and we make it make sense in the way that children learn.  Completing homework for school is still important, and we give our students the skills and confidence needed to be successful with their schoolwork.  That helps them regain their interest and enthusiasm for math!

Does Mathnasium give homework? At Mathnasium, we help with homework and don’t pile on more work at home for everyone.  Part of every math workout is set aside for homework help, or preparing for tests and quizzes.  This helps students keep up with their current schoolwork.  We can also suggest further activities at home to help students brush up their skills while having fun.

What makes doing homework at Mathnasium different?

There are many things about our center, trained instructors, and method that work together to turn homework time into a more enjoyable experience for students.  Inside the center, students have a fun and welcoming environment where they can focus on their work without stress.  Students have one-on-one instruction with our staff, and our staff gives students the independent time they need to solve problems on their own.  Students get more and more confidence to work independently.  And the Mathnasium Method reinforces the most effective ways to work on math, while extending understanding of the concepts.  That makes learning math more enjoyable for everyone.
