Secret to effective teaching: Make math make sense

Helping people is at the heart of my approach to life.  I found that teaching math was the best way that I could have a positive impact on kids, and the world.  As a high school math teacher in Somerville, and a coordinator to help struggling high schools and middle schools in Massachusetts, I learned a lot about how hard math can seem for kids that don’t “get it” early in their life.

But I also saw that it’s possible to help kids get it, if you teach them in the right way.  I saw this firsthand in teaching my Algebra I class, and I’ll never forget it.  One day I went through my whole lesson plan for 45 minutes of class, doing it “by the book.”  Blank stares told me that the class was not grasping the topic.  I paused for a second, had an insight in how to explain it my way, and gave it a shot.  One student exclaimed, “Mr. Nelson, why didn’t you just teach us that in the first place?”  This taught me how powerful it can be to teach in a way that makes sense to kids.  This is the core of the Mathnasium Method that drives our instruction – both in the content of our materials, and how our instructors teach in a customized, kid-friendly way to each of our students.
