Probability and Prizes

This is one of 10 landing spaces on our prize wheel. You have to land on it three times in a row to get the jackpot of five free cards. (Cards are redeemable for prizes.) Assuming there’s an equal chance of landing on each space on the wheel, what are the odds of getting the jackpot? It happened last week (June 12), for the first time since this jackpot was put on the wheel in April.

The probability of landing on that space on your first spin is 1/10.

The probability of landing on that space on your first spin *and* landing on it again on your second spin is 1/10 of 1/10, or 1/100.

And the probability of landing on it three times in a row is 1/10 of 1/10 of 1/10, or 1/1,000.
