About Our Lady Queen Of Peace Catholic School

Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish was established in August, 1955, with 202 charter families, under the founding pastor, Monsignor Driscoll. In 1956, a $250,000 building project was begun to construct a school and convent. The original school building had eight classrooms, a kitchen, lunchroom and a 300-seat auditorium, which served as a temporary church. Monsignor Driscoll was a key figure in the establishment of Queen of Peace School and guided it effectively during his tenure as pastor until his departure in 1983. Mgr. John McEvilly succeeded Msgr. Driscoll and led Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish until his retirement in 2015. Following Msgr. McEvilly, Fr. Matthew Elie let the parish until his reassignment in 2023.  Currently, Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish is under the able leadership of Fr. Godfrey Mullen.

Our Lady Queen of Peace School was opened on January 31, 1957, with 179 students. By 1962 the school’s enrollment had grown to 415 students. Construction of an all-purpose parish building had begun in 1962, and that building later became the permanent church. With that, the former church facilities in the school basement were converted to much-needed classroom space. As enrollment continued to grow, expansion of the school followed. In 1967, a two-story annex to the original school building was constructed, which provided four additional classrooms and other necessary space. By that time, enrollment was more than 550 students.

The Msgr. Driscoll Parish Center was built in 1983 and is utilized extensively by the school’s athletic department as well as for physical education classes, assemblies and other school and parish sponsored special programs. The school is currently staffed by a lay administrator, Mrs. Michelle Tidwell, and faculty, with support from the pastor, Fr. Godfrey Mullen.

Current enrollment at Our Lady Queen of Peace School is 150 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The faculty consists of 11 full-time teachers and 5 part-time teachers. The school board has formulated policies to guide the administration in keeping the student-per-teacher ratio as low as possible within financial constraints.

Queen of Peace offers a challenging and progressive curriculum with appropriate emphasis on religious education and sacramental preparation. In addition to the core subjects of English, reading, math, social studies and science additional courses in Spanish, music, physical education and computer are taught. Computers have been incorporated into the general curriculum over the past several years. Each classroom now has projection and white board capabilities. Two computer labs provided instructional internet access for all students.

Sacramental preparation is emphasized in second grade as students receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist and in eighth grade when students are confirmed. The Family Life program teaches students respect for all life. Classroom religious education is enhanced by all-school Masses each week. Various para-liturgical celebrations are held throughout the year including: Reconciliation, Stations of the Cross and the Living Rosary.

Service to others is a significant focus of Queen of Peace School’s mission. Service learning projects are created each year to give students an opportunity to help locally as well as globally. Students have helped locally by support the Interfaith Food Pantry and Catholic Urban Program collect food and partnering with the Humane Society. Outreach beyond our community has included support the American Heart Association, Water Mission International and Heifer International.

To achieve well-rounded growth, students are offered a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. These include band, chorus, chess, Scholar Bowl, Speech, Math Team and the National Geography Bee. Athletic programs in baseball, basketball, softball, soccer, volleyball and track are offered grade five through eight.

Queen of Peace strives to meet the intellectual needs of all students. Title 1 services are provided  on site by District 175 to QP students in grades one to four to improve math and reading skills. Intervention to improve math skills in grade five to eight is offered daily. Accelerated students receive the opportunity to take high school credit Algebra at Queen of Peace.

Communication and interaction with parents is constantly encouraged by the faculty and administration. Student grades are available to the parents daily through our data information system. Progress Reports and Report Cards track student progress every four weeks to keep parents well informed. Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled twice each year. Additional consultation is welcomed and available upon request.
