Ready For Second Grade

Jun 29, 2021 | Palmetto Bay

With schools transitioning to a distance learning platform, there may be a concern as to whether your child is actually prepared for the next grade level. Don’t fret! At Mathnasium, we can help assure you that your child is ready for 2nd grade! We take an orderly, logical approach to teaching math. We will teach your child number sense by helping them understand how numbers work and will build their numerical fluency- the ability to effortlessly recall addition and subtraction facts.

Each student has a custom learning plan based on the results of a written and verbal assessment unique to Mathnasium. Their custom learning plan will help close any educational gaps they may have and will make it easier for your child to face advanced math challenges as they come. The Mathnasium MethodTM teaches for understanding rather than memorization so that your child is ready for whatever comes next in math class!

Here are a few key skills we will help your child with to make sure they start off 2nd grade strong!

Place Value

Understand, "78 ones is the same as 7 tens and 8 ones," for all whole numbers to 1,000.

Identify ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands place.

Read and write whole numbers up to 1,000 in standard form.

Rounding off: "Is 765 closer to 700 or to 800?" for appropriate numbers.

Proportional Thinking

"Recyclers pay 5¢ for every 2 cans. How many cans are needed to get 25¢? How much are 8 cans worth?"
