Why I love Mathnasium . . . . .
It gives kids a way to connect with math and see its importance. Every instructor has a
fun story to tell, or neat trick to simplify the topic, and learning is such a personal thing.
It’s tough to do it in a 30-kid classroom, and we provide that personal touch that can
make it all click.
Favorite number: Any perfect square, though 49 and 81 in particular because they’re just off from round
10’s (and 81 is a perfect square of a perfect square!)
Hobbies:
I love to read, play games, and explore new places. The Renaissance Festival in the
summer is the best, and I go multiple times a year. I’m always trying new restaurants
and activities. I’d absolutely adore to visit some new cities and historical sites!
About me While I’m not a Colorado native , I have spent most of my life in this beautiful state. I attended Bear Creek High School, Metropolitan State University of Denver and the University of Colorado at Denver. I have two Bachelor’s degrees (Mathematics and Psychology) and a Master’s Degree in Secondary Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Secondary Mathematics.
Why I Love Working at Mathnasium:
For twenty-nine years, I had the privilege of teaching high school math in Denver. During that time, I worked with a wonderfully diverse group of students that came from over forty different countries and spoke over sixty languages. There is nothing like the sparkle in a child’s eye when they have that “aha” moment of understanding. Mathnasium provides both the students and me with the opportunity to experience that “aha” moment everyday.
Favorite Number: Any number that is a palindrome - I love the symmetry!
Hobbies:
I enjoy golf, skiing, reading, scuba diving, traveling and of course, math! In recent years I’ve had many wonderful travel opportunities including a tour of London and Scotland, and scuba diving trips to Mexico, Grand Cayman, and Hawaii. My favorite was the London/Scotland trip which included dinner in the Tower of London, a private viewing of the Crown Jewels and a round of golf at both St. Andrews and Gleneagles.
What our students say they like about Barb "Barb always asks me how my day was. She is always nice to me and I love her positivity."
About me:
I grew up in a family with a long line of entrepreneurs. I graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in mathematics and a teaching certification. Instead of using my teaching qualifications, I followed in my family's footsteps of being business owners and opened a retail store in Fort Collins at the age of 22. I've had a few different businesses along the way and discovered Mathnasium in late 2011. I opened the Parker center in January 2012. I have loved helping children with their understanding of math, and witnessing their increased confidence and self esteem!
Hobbies:
I have a deep love of animals and I enjoy spending my spare time with my 2 rescue dogs. I used to have two dogs who were certified "pet therapists." We spent many hours visiting hospitals to share some canine love with the patients.I have always loved traveling, and one of my favorite ways to see the world is long distance cross-country walking trips. My first trip was through part of Tuscany, Italy for about 60 miles. I have also traveled to Scotland and walked/hiked through the highlands for 92 miles in 6 days. While not a walking trip, I had a life-impacting trip to India. I spent time in orphanages as well as a center for abandoned adults/seniors. I did get some walking in though, as my trip wrapped up with a few days of hiking and camping in the Himalayas.
