African-American History Month: Benjamin Banneker

Feb 1, 2021 | Pasadena

This month, we are honoring Benjamin Banneker (1731 - 1806), who was mostly a self-educated man in Mathematics and Astronomy.  He was a free African-American almanac author, surveyor, naturalist, and farmer during a time when formal education was a luxury that many could not afford.

He is best known for building America's first clock - a wooden device that struck "on the hour."

Benjamin Banneker, the son of a former slave, was also a civil rights advocate.  In the late 1700's, he wrote letters to (then Secretary of State) Thomas Jefferson asking for assistance in improving conditions for Blacks living in the Untied States.
