At Mathnasium of Pike Creek, we utilize a "braintrust" of vetted STEM savants and educators—not untrained peer tutors. Our hiring process is the most rigorous in New Castle County, requiring a passing score on a pencil-and-paper, no calculator test…which 80% of applicants fail. The few who pass are then vetted for passion about education and suitability to work with kids. This ensures every instructor provides the psychological safety and mathematical proficiency required to transform a student's relationship with math.

Math is About People, Not Just Packets
Most tutoring centers in our area, including brands like Kumon or Math Plus, rely on high school students or "graders" to manage large volumes of worksheets. At Mathnasium of Pike Creek, we take the opposite approach.
We believe that math is just as much about attitude and comfort as it is about proficiency. If a tutor is shaky on their foundations, that anxiety transfers to the student. To create a space that is physically and psychologically safe for learning, we start with the adults in the room.
The 20% Rule: Our Rigorous Hiring Standards
We receive applications from brilliant individuals across the state, including college students at respected universities studying engineering and mathematics. However, being "good at math" in a classroom is different from being a Pike Creek Braintrust Member.
The Math Literacy Exam: Every candidate must pass a comprehensive math assessment before they even reach the interview stage. Currently, 80% of applicants fail this test. We do not allow "shaky foundations" near our students. For our upper level math position, candidates must pass an additional test proving their knowledge in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus.
The Culture Fit Interview: Once a candidate proves their proficiency, they interview with our leadership team. We are looking for mentors who can translate complex logic into "aha!" moments.
Background Check: All candidates are background checked before hire.
Diverse Expertise: Our team isn't just one-dimensional. We have a diverse "Braintrust" ranging from professional elementary school teachers to Masters in STEM fields to 4.0 engineers and pre-meds at the University of Delaware. Our room is filled with some of the sharpest raw math minds in the county.
Learning by Doing: The Training Phase
Passing the test is only the beginning. Every new hire at our Pike Creek center undergoes an intensive training program directly with the owner.
This isn't just reading a manual. It involves one-on-one role-play tutoring sessions where instructors must demonstrate their ability to teach "The Mathnasium Way." We emphasize:
Psychological Safety: Whether your student is behind at Cooke, doing okay at The Independence School, or already taking AP Calc AB as a sophomore at Charter, one thing remains constant: shame and embarrassment have no place in math education.
Socratic Questioning: Teaching students how to think, not just what to write. Our goal is not to get them to the right answer as quickly as possible, but to facilitate their connection of the dots in their brain. We like to say that we want the students to struggle, but not suffer. This is how we all learn and grow! All instructors are taught this method so that instruction time is spent helping the child truly learn, not just finish their work.
Homework Help: Beyond the core Mathnasium curriculum, instructors are taught how to efficiently and effectively navigate homework and all its common challenges we hear from parents regarding the often strange feel that "new math" can bring. For what it's worth, math is no different, only the approach is. Our instructors are trained to accommodate it across the public, private, and charter schools in Hockessin, Pike Creek, Newark, and Wilmington.
Continuous Feedback: Even our veteran tutors are shadowed remotely and provided with constructive feedback to ensure our standards never slip. From our rising star college students that work with our algebra students to our seasoned educators helping 2nd-graders with subtraction, we are always encouraging growth within our team just like we do within our students.
Mathnasium vs. The "Worksheet" Models
While other programs focus on "grading pages," we focus on mentorship. When your student walks into our center, they aren't being handed a packet by a peer who is just there for a summer job. They are joining a community led by professionals who have dedicated their careers to mathematical mastery.
We are proud of our team, and we are proud of the "Braintrust" we have built for the families of Pike Creek and Newark. When we say your child is in good hands, we have the data—and the 80% rejection rate—to prove it.
