Kevin Steinhelper

Center Director

Kevin Steinhelper has worked with Mathnasium since 2012 and has served as Center Director of Plymouth-Canton since 2016. He also directs the West Bloomfield center and holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Michigan. 

Kevin previously worked as an actuarial analyst and has loved math since childhood. He is passionate about putting students first and ensuring every child leaves feeling confident in what they learned. Outside of Mathnasium, Kevin enjoys sports, playing piano, and spending time with his nieces and nephews. 

Barb

Assistant Center Director

Barb is an Assistant Center Director with over 30 years of teaching and tutoring experience. She holds both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts from Eastern Michigan University. 

Barb loves witnessing students’ “aha” moments and is deeply committed to helping learners succeed. She brings warmth and encouragement to every session. Outside of Mathnasium, Barb enjoys gardening, golfing, traveling, and spending time outdoors with family and friends. A fun fact is that her identical twin sister is also a retired teacher and tutor. 

Naina

Assistant Center Director

Naina brings eight years of teaching and tutoring experience to Mathnasium. Her passion for teaching is what drew her to the role, and that passion shows in how she approaches every session. What she loves most about teaching math is the interaction with students and the opportunity to help them build real, lasting skills. Naina especially enjoys working through multi-step problems and fractions, guiding students step by step until the process becomes second nature.

Melissa

Instructor

Melissa holds a Master of Arts with a K–12 reading endorsement from the University of Michigan–Dearborn and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with minors in Math and Science. She has nine years of teaching experience. 

Melissa enjoys helping students find joy in math, especially through building number fluency and problem-solving confidence. She loves seeing students master challenging concepts. Outside of teaching, Melissa enjoys attending Detroit sports games and is a devoted Detroit Lions fan. She also played piano for eight years. 

Judy

Instructor

Judy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Northern Michigan University and has completed postgraduate work in Early Childhood Education at Eastern Michigan University. With over 30 years of teaching and tutoring experience, Judy’s passion for teaching math shines through every session. Her greatest joy comes from witnessing the moment a student masters a concept they once found challenging. She especially enjoys teaching Algebra 1 and finds it incredibly rewarding to build confidence in her students. Beyond the classroom, Judy is a proud “Cat Lady” with three cats and has been volunteering at the Huron Valley Humane Society for 10 years. Judy’s favorite math-related quote is, “Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: it is about UNDERSTANDING!” – William Paul Thurston.

Melanie

Instructor

Melanie holds a B.S. in Chemistry from Valparaiso University and both an M.S. in Chemistry and an MBA from the University of Michigan. After leaving the automotive industry, she sought a more fulfilling career and found inspiration in her high school math teacher. At Mathnasium, Melanie enjoys solving problems and helping students experience those "ah-ha" moments when concepts finally click. Her favorite topics to teach include strategies for solving story problems and proportions. Outside of tutoring, Melanie spends her free time gardening, growing a variety of vegetables, and sharing stories about her unique upbringing on a mint farm. She lives by the motto: "The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics."

Matthew P

Instructor

Matthew is a graduate of Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He joined Mathnasium because he likes making math engaging and approachable for students and helping build confidence in math. Algebra is Matthew’s favorite math topic to teach. Matthew grew up overseas, has lived in four different countries, and has traveled to many different places. In addition to traveling, Matthew enjoys wood working, gardening, cooking, and spending time with his wife, three dogs, and cat!

Craig

Instructor

Craig is a math teacher with over 30 years of experience. He has coached high school wrestling as well. Craig is a graduate of Siena Heights and Eastern Michigan Universities. He joined Mathnasium because of his love of math and working with numbers. His favorite math topic to teach is geometry. Craig’s philosophy when it comes to learning math is “Don’t tell me…Show me!”

Ayesha

Instructor

Ayesha is currently attending Washtenaw Technical Middle College, where she is pursuing an Associate’s degree in General Math & Science, with plans to continue on to earn a BSN. She has volunteered at summer school programs for several years and is on the tutoring committee at her school. Ayesha especially enjoys teaching algebra, seeing it as a key foundation for future math success. At Mathnasium, she loves watching students light up when a concept finally clicks. In her free time, Ayesha enjoys reading, going on walks, spending time with her cat, and organizing family movie nights. A fun fact about her: visiting the markets of Morocco is on her bucket list!

Aissata

Instructor

Aissata is currently studying Public Health at Wayne State University. She joined Mathnasium because she wanted to be part of a place where students can build confidence and truly enjoy learning. Her favorite topics to teach are fractions and order of operations, as they form the foundation for so many important math skills. Aissata loves seeing the moment when a student finally grasps a concept—the excitement and pride on their face make teaching incredibly rewarding. Outside of Mathnasium, she enjoys baking and spending time on the slopes, as skiing is one of her favorite pastimes.

Aryan

Instructor

Aryan is currently a senior in high school and discovered his passion for teaching while tutoring for the National Honor Society. Aryan loves helping students build strong problem-solving skills and gain confidence as they work through math challenges. His favorite topic to teach is algebra because of the way it strengthens logical thinking and lays the foundation for higher-level math. Outside of Mathnasium, Aryan enjoys watching soccer.

Swetha

Instructor

Swetha holds a B.S. in Computer Science from MSU and enjoys helping students grow their confidence in math. She loves teaching math because it builds strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills that students can apply beyond the classroom. Swetha especially enjoys teaching geometric proofs for the way they encourage logical reasoning and clear thinking. She began tutoring in high school and is excited to continue supporting students after college. Outside of Mathnasium, Swetha is an artist and enjoys expressing her creativity in her free time.

Saanvi

Instructor

Saanvi is currently pursuing a degree in Movement Science at the University of Michigan. She joined Mathnasium after previously tutoring elsewhere and enjoying the experience of helping students learn and grow. Saanvi loves witnessing the “aha” moment when students finally understand a concept and gain confidence in their abilities. Her favorite topic to teach is factoring, where she enjoys helping students break problems into manageable steps. Outside of Mathnasium, Saanvi enjoys watching TV, reading, and spending time with friends.

Matthew T

Instructor

Matthew holds a Master’s degree in Secondary Mathematics and Special Education, with a focus on Emotional Impairment and Autism, earned through studies at Wayne State University, the University of Michigan–Dearborn, and Oakland University. With 20 years of teaching experience, he brings deep expertise and a strong commitment to helping students build confidence in math. Matthew was drawn to Mathnasium after hearing great things about the center and values its focus on supporting students at every level. His favorite subject to teach is Algebra 2, where he enjoys guiding students through more advanced problem-solving. Outside of Mathnasium, Matthew enjoys gardening and spending time with his family 

Chris

Instructor

Chris holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Michigan State University and a Master’s degree in Elementary Education with a math major from Wayne State University. After retiring from a 25-year career as an elementary school teacher, Chris joined Mathnasium to continue doing what he loves most—helping students grow and develop strong math skills. He enjoys exploring the variety of strategies that can be used to solve each math concept and guiding students toward that rewarding “aha” moment. Chris’s favorite topic to teach is fractions, where he enjoys helping students build a strong foundation for future learning. Outside of Mathnasium, Chris is a self-proclaimed expert in Seinfeld and The Office trivia.

Rebecca

Instructor

Rebecca holds a Bachelor of Arts from Knox College with majors in Mathematics and Music, as well as a Master of Science in Law from Northwestern University. With a strong passion for teaching math, she joined Mathnasium to help students build understanding in ways that work best for each individual learner. Rebecca especially enjoys teaching proofs, where she can guide students through logical reasoning and multiple problem-solving approaches. With 10 years of tutoring experience, she brings patience, flexibility, and depth of knowledge to every session. Outside of Mathnasium, Rebecca builds her own speakers and amplifiers and enjoys playing musical instruments, especially piano.

Cheyenne

Instructor

Cheyenne holds dual Bachelor of Science degrees from Michigan State University in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology/Biotechnology and in Genomics and Molecular Genetics. She was drawn to Mathnasium by its positive, encouraging atmosphere and its focus on helping students build confidence as they tackle challenging problems. Cheyenne especially enjoys teaching algebra, which she sees as a big puzzle that becomes exciting when students experience their “aha” moments. With about four and a half years of tutoring experience, she brings patience, encouragement, and enthusiasm to every session. Outside of Mathnasium, Cheyenne enjoys crafting—especially crocheting amigurumi—and previously played the double bass for seven years.
