At Mathnasium of Rancho Peñasquitos, we believe that building strong problem-solving skills goes beyond mathematics. While confidence in math is at the heart of everything we do, helping children develop practical life skills is just as important. This summer, our Power Hour Friday: Financial Literacy Series gave students the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of personal finance through engaging, hands-on activities that connected math to everyday life.
Over several weeks, our Mathletes learned the five key pillars of financial literacy: Earning, Saving, Spending, Budgeting, and Borrowing. Each Power Hour Friday focused on one of these important topics through interactive games, team challenges, role-playing activities, and real-world scenarios that made learning exciting and memorable.
Students discovered that money is earned through hard work, responsibility, creativity, and valuable skills. They learned why saving helps achieve future goals, how to make thoughtful spending decisions by recognizing the difference between wants and needs, and how budgeting helps balance priorities. They also explored borrowing responsibly and why understanding loans and repayment is an important part of making smart financial decisions.
Throughout the series, students earned Power Hour Dollars by participating enthusiastically, working together, answering questions, completing challenges, and demonstrating good sportsmanship. These rewards added excitement to every session while reinforcing that effort, participation, and positive choices have value.
The series concluded on August 7 with one of the students' most anticipated events—a Power Hour Marketplace. After weeks of earning and saving their Power Hour Dollars, students had the opportunity to "shop" for prizes and treats using the currency they had accumulated throughout the program. This final activity brought all of the lessons together, allowing students to experience firsthand the importance of budgeting, making purchasing decisions, and managing limited resources. Some chose to spend everything they had earned, while others carefully compared their options before deciding how to use their savings, putting their newly learned financial skills into practice.
Watching our students make thoughtful choices during the marketplace was a wonderful reminder that financial literacy is best learned through experience. By giving them the opportunity to earn, save, and spend in a fun, age-appropriate environment, they gained confidence that extends well beyond the classroom.
Power Hour Fridays have become much more than an enrichment activity—they are an opportunity to connect mathematics with real-life decision-making, teamwork, and personal responsibility. We are incredibly proud of every Mathlete who participated in this year's Financial Literacy Series and embraced each challenge with enthusiasm.
