7 Math Questions to Ask at Your Fall Parent-Teacher Conference

Oct 9, 2026 | Rochester North

A guide for Rochester and Shelby families

Fall conferences are one of the best chances all year to get a clear picture of how your child is doing. But a 15-minute meeting goes quickly, and it’s easy to leave realizing you never asked about math. If you’re a parent in Rochester, Shelby Township, or the surrounding area, here are seven questions that will help you make the most of the time.

1. Where is my child compared to grade-level expectations in math?

This is the big-picture question. Ask whether your child is working below, at, or above grade level, and what that’s based on: classroom work, fall assessments, or both. A specific answer is much more useful than “doing fine.”

2. What are my child’s strongest math skills?

Start with the positives. Knowing what’s going well helps you encourage your child at home, and it often points to where their confidence is coming from.

3. Where are they struggling, and what does it look like?

Ask for examples. Is it memorizing math facts, understanding word problems, working with place value, or keeping up with the pace of the class? Pinpointing the exact skill tells you what to practice and what to watch.

4. Are there any gaps from earlier grades?

Math builds on itself, so a shaky spot from last year can make this year’s lessons harder. If the teacher sees one, ask how big it is and how it’s being addressed.

5. How does my child participate and feel about math in class?

Confidence matters as much as skill. Ask whether your child raises their hand, asks for help, or seems anxious or frustrated. A child who understands the material but hesitates to speak up needs different support from one who is truly lost.

6. What can we do at home to help?

Ask for two or three specific, realistic things: a skill to practice, a game to play, or a routine for homework. Concrete suggestions beat general advice.

7. How will we know if things are improving?

Ask what progress will look like and when you should check in again. Agreeing on a follow-up, even a short email in a month, keeps momentum going after the conference.

What if the answers worry you?

Don’t panic. Hearing that your child is behind, or even just not as confident as you hoped, is useful information, and the earlier it comes in the school year, the more time there is to act on it. The same goes for kids who are doing well and are ready for more of a challenge.

Support at home helps, and many families also find that individualized instruction makes the difference. When a child gets lessons built around exactly what they need, gaps close faster and confidence grows. At Mathnasium of Rochester North, we begin with a free assessment to see where your child stands, then create a learning plan just for them.
