Lucy Potter
Center Director
Lucy holds a double major in Biology and Classical Languages from UC Davis. She’s had a wide-ranging career, from teaching aboard tall ships to stomping grapes in Italy to earning a master’s in Environmental Policy.
Lucy joined Mathnasium in 2019 and became Center Director in 2023. She’s passionate about math as a tool for empowerment and civic engagement and brings her contagious love of learning to every student she meets.
Andre Bertrand
Co-Owner
Andre earned an Electrical Engineering degree from McGill University and worked for over 25 years in telecommunications and multimedia before bringing Mathnasium to Albany-Berkeley.
Previously a Senior VP at iHeartRadio, Andre has lived and worked across Canada, Germany, Panama, and the U.S. As a parent and educator, he’s committed to offering personalized, engaging math instruction that meets students where they are.
Christopher Wood
Co-Owner
Chris holds a B.S. in Finance from San Diego State University and has over 14 years of accounting experience, including auditing at KPMG. He now runs Mathnasium of Alameda and co-owns Mathnasium of Rockridge.
A dedicated coach and problem solver, Chris brings both analytical expertise and a deep commitment to student success. Outside of work, he enjoys swimming, water polo, and spending time with his two sons.
Tyler Ho
Instructor
Tyler is a mechanical engineering student at Cal Poly SLO. A graduate of Oakland Tech, he has completed college-level courses in calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations.
Though math isn’t his favorite subject, Tyler values its power to model and explain the world. He enjoys helping others grasp challenging concepts and also spends time playing piano, folding origami, and gaming.
Ellen Shaler

Ellen has over 30 years of classroom experience, including 25 years in Oakland Unified School District teaching 4th and 5th grade math and science.
Originally from Detroit, Ellen holds a teaching credential from the University of Michigan. Now retired, she volunteers and tutors at Mathnasium, bringing warmth, number sense, and her favorite saying: “Math is good and good for ya. We love math!”

No, Mathnasium does not assign homework. All instruction takes place during scheduled sessions with our tutors, so students can make measurable progress without additional assignments to complete at home.
